Ingo Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I know this has been mentioned a few times over the last couple of months but who gives the best price per Kg for old dead batteries in the Pretoria/Centurion area? Ingo Quote
Gerrie Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 Have you tested your batteries? My old bank had only one dead and three good batteries after I thought they were gone, those good ones might be worth a bit more per kg Quote

I could build a new bank with four 'seemingly good' ones but it defeats the purpose of having a large bank for such long LS time periods we have. It's a pity, they were costly and if I sell them to someone else they might just get 6 months or a year out of them. I could build a small trolley... Hmm?? Or just take the money and recoup some loss in favor of the LiFePo4 battery waiting installation. Quote
Chris Louw Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 Charge the good batteries if you do have spare PV capacity and use them on a spare inverter . Use the full capacity of the batteries and then sell as scrap . I still have the 12v system I started with so the batteries get used to the last one . Ingo 1 Quote

I don’t want to sell them as scrap, but also don’t really have a use for them right now. I see a great opportunity for second life battery’s for newcomers who do not have funds for brand new batteries, or someone just doing test runs on solar installations where any 48V bank will do. Similar to what is done with the old lithium's comming out of electric cherry pickers and access control equipment, these are being re-branded as second life. Quote
Gerrie Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Is their a scrap value on old lead acid batteries, I have a old set from a client that I am going to test and possibly use but want to give the cleint some credit for the scrap value. Has anyone actually sold some to a scrap dealer before and what do they pay per kg ? Quote
WestCoastUPS Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 I'm in Cape Town and get around R9 per kg scrap value. That was a few months ago though. Generally I find that if one battery is gone the rest soon follow and I don"t have the time to test them. Gerrie 1 Quote
