Is it a good idea to buy used batteries?
i agree that batteries (at the current price) are not saving you money. Another thing to remember is, that you will only achieve about 200 cycles/year. Assuming a life expectancy of 10 years that is only 2000 cycles. Batteries at the moment only make sense if you need them to bridge load shedding or if you are forced to live off grid (or if it is your hobby 🙂).

CoCT and CoT SSEG Maximum PV Inverter Size (Fronius) in a Victron Energy Storage System
Again, a very reasonable rule to restrict maximum battery charge current to 25% of grid connection. I am sure most users support this. It will however be veeeery difficult to enforce.

CoCT and CoT SSEG Maximum PV Inverter Size (Fronius) in a Victron Energy Storage System
This is a much more reasonable approach. I am glad the CoCT has changed the rules. Based on the old rules i was forced to limit the maximum output (no feed in system) to 3.5kW. Do you know what the process is if i want to make use of the new rules and increase the PV capacity? I hope i do not have to go through the whole registration process again 🙁.

Cost of solar generation
true, but on top of it you have to remain a net consumer 🤣.

Cost of solar generation
I think the problem is, that the law still does not allow municipalities/cities to purchase electricity from IPP's.

what is the present situation regarding the IPP and SSEG implementation in South Africa? I am not following the local politics anymore (to depressing) 🙁

@Rautenk is a professional engineer in CT. He signed off my installation. I was very happy with his service.

Why your BMS is not an optional extra
Cell balance is perfect (check regularly with the Pylontech battery view app). Maybe you are not aware that the Pylontech batteries have a build in BMS.

Why your BMS is not an optional extra
i agree and can confirm (based on my 8 month experience) that a system without battery-inverter communication can work very well. My Goodwe inverter is to old to talk to the Pylontech batteries without a very expensive external control box. What is important is that you can accurately track SOC and set the required battery charge and discharge parameters (both are possible with my inverter). To be able to manually set the optimum battery charge/discharge parameters for your specific case is in my view also better than what the BMS would dictate.

Switching on outside lights with alarm system
I agree. If the system can be hardwired this is the way to go. In my case it was not possible. I needed a wireless solution.

Switching on outside lights with alarm system
No. I connected the Alarm PGM output (dry contact) to the Raspberry and used it as a binary sensor in HA to control the Sonoff mini's.

thanks for the information. I ended up using Home Assistant with Sonoff mini's.

Circumventing the COCT 3.5kVA limit
i can confirm that. They have signed off my system. You can even have more that 3.5kW of panels on the roof if you can proof that (because of all the losses) the inverter output is not exceeding 3.5kW. I have 4.4kW on the roof 🙂. As @plonkstersays lets sleeping dogs lie regarding the pickup concern if you have a hybrid inverter with batteries 🤣.

thanks @Weasel very helpful information.

Switching on outside lights with alarm system
thanks for the info. Do you think the QuickSwitch transmitter will accept the signal from the alarm PGM output?

Pylontech US3000 Batteries charging difference from PV vs. Eskom
if i remember correctly he only did this until he managed to set up the communication link between the inverter and the Revov's. If your batteries are able to talk to the inverter i would not advice to manage them in self define mode.
-
Pylontech US3000 Batteries charging difference from PV vs. Eskom
the inverter has a maximum charge capability of 100A. In your case the battery BMS tells the inverter to limit this to 74A. As long as the batteries are allowed to communicate with the inverter it will not let you change it. The reason why the batteries were only charging at 1.14kW could be because the SOC was already to high for the batteries to allow the maximum 74A charge current.

thanks for the info. If i can not find a wireless solution i will consider this.

Switching on outside lights with alarm system
i would like the alarm system to switch on the outside lights if an alarm is triggered. The alarm system (Paradox) has programmable PGM outputs (12V 700mA) i could use to generate the required "on" signal. How do i use this signal to switch on the lights? The system would have to operate wireless.

A calculator for ROI on solar in South Africa
ahh i see the calculations are based on a system exporting the surplus energy into the grid 🙂. What is the kWh feed in tariff and the cost of the bi directional meter used in the calculation? Can this be changed in line with the specific values of the location?
