Hi everyone, I am new to solar and just feeling a little nervous doing the install myself. So I have been doing allot of reading. I ended up buying the SunSynk 5kw inverter and 6x Bifacial 650W Candian Solar panels as a start.

Being a noob, I did not know or check information like Voc and any other string considerations.  

I would appreciate it is someone could firstly help me confirm with those panels would work with the inverter or do I have to return them for others?

They have a Voc of 43.66v and Short circuit current of 18.85A (Model: BiESC6 630-650 ), I am little worried because the input amps on the inverter is only 11A?

Any suggestions would be apprecated.

Hi.

The 5kw Sunsynk has been updated to take 13A per MPPT. 
 

Your panels have a Vmpp of 37.32V and an Impp of 17.44A which when multiplied together gives you 650W. Being a 13A MPPT, 37.32V x 13A = 485w so theoretically, you will lose 165w per panel. At around R6 per watt, it also becomes a financial loss. 
 

I would return them for a 460w panel. 
 

 

It's really a pity, this type of thing could have been avoided if the retailer had the knowledge, and cared enough to share this kind of info with the OP. 

@mailerdaemon I have noted the Skynat logo on the .pdf. Did they supply the inverter as well as the panels? Have you actually received them or are you still waiting?

There is a thread on MyBB that addresses Skynat Energy's dishonest practices, personally I would choose someone else with more credibility.

165W per panel lost at a minimum. If both sides of the panel are used then it's even more, up to 263W lost per panel.☹️

Yeah, but luckily we only have one sun, so it does not quite work out like that. 🤪

Bifacials are definitely a waste when roof mounted with a tight gap.

Yip, they are ideally suited for ground mounting or flat roof mounting.
And correctly mounted to take advantage of their design also ends up taking up a lot of space and framing costs.

@mailerdaemon definitely try get those panels swapped out with more suitable size.

Firstly, thanks everyone for the prompt feedback. I really appreciate it. 

@YellowTapemeasure : I bought the inverter from another company before contacting skynat regarding the 650W panels. I did phone them though before ordering to ask whether it was compatible, and they said it would be fine.  🤔 Also thanks for the thread on MyBB, scary.

 

@WannabeSolarSparky : So for me it has been established that the panels are far too high spec'd but I don't have much roof space and my longest side of the roof is north facing. Hence why I opted for the high wattage panels. Would the inverter just clip the amps? BUT would it damage the inverter though?

 

Also I have already paid for them, and is being delivered, so I don't have much choice in using them. Should I just keep them, and look into the future to move to a 8KW Sunsynk. Because it is over spec'd would it not start generating earlier in the morning as well, so it might not be a bad thing?

The amps would be clipped, so you would lose quite a bit of the rated power.
As long as the voltages are well within spec you should be safe except for the losses.
It's usually the voltages that cause "magic smoke"

Take a look at the side sticker of your 5K Sunsynk, the maximum Amps are quoted there.

 I am not a CPA lawyer, but you should still be able to return them on the basis that it is not fit for purpose. You should be looking for panels that are under but closest to 13A in order to minimise footprint. They do exist.

I hope you do receive then. 650w panels are difficult to source in SA

They do have stock, but I am in the process of trying to cancel the order for now.
