Sunsynk Data Logger connection issues

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have recently installed a Sunsynk 5kw inverter with data logger. When connecting the data logger to the site wifi router, it gives me a failed message. However laptop and phones connect perfectly to the site router. When setting up a hotspot on my phone, the Data Logger connects easily and I have full remote access. The problem lies with the data logger not wanting to connect to the specific site router.

Are there specific settings or security protocols on the router that would prohibit the data logger from connecting? The internet connection is an ADSL connection, What I have also noticed is that when I try to access the web based Sunsynk portal  via laptop connected to the same site router, it also fails to open and connect to portal. When connecting laptop to phone hotspot, then portal is accessible. The only thing I can think of is maybe the router is dated and data logger is declining connection due to outdated security protocol on router. The router is just under 2 meters away from the inverter. The router model is a D-Link DSL-2740U

Thanks

The wifi network you are trying to get the logger to connect to - is it 2.4 or 5ghz band network? Most of these types of devices only work on the 2.4ghz band network.

Hope this helps:From your phone log into the wifi network created by your data logger.

Then go to the following address from your phone browser and setup the logger to login to your home WiFi from there:

10.10.10.1

I suspect you are using WEP security on your ADSL WiFi modem from years ago. Most current IOT devices will not connect to "low security" WEP networks.

Update to WPA/2/3. Unfortunately all wireless devices will need to be re-connected using the new security protocol enabled on your modem.

Good luck with your shiny new SunSynk system, and hope you have many happy years of use from it.

Welcome to the forum too. :)

It sounds like you have a firewall of some sorts that is blocking outbound connections to obscure ports. Whilst this is good security practice, it will not work and needs a rule to allow the logger to initiate outbound connections to the Sunsynk servers using TCP destination port 51100. Here is an excerpt from my firewall log:

2022:11:25-01:02:02 fw ulogd[1848]: id="2002" severity="info" sys="SecureNet" sub="packetfilter" name="Packet accepted" action="accept" fwrule="7" initf="eth1" outitf="ppp0" srcmac="[redacted]" dstmac="[redacted]" srcip="[redacted]" dstip="47.242.67.221" proto="6" length="44" tos="0x00" prec="0x00" ttl="254" srcport="53616" dstport="51100" tcpflags="SYN"

It reaches out to destination IP 114.215.211.179 or 47.242.67.221, which are IP addresses belonging to servers hosted in Hangzou and Hong Kong. None of these IP addresses have their reverse lookup set, so I cannot determine the domain names.

The firewall is either before your DSL router or part of the router itself.

Hi zathras,

I manage to get pass this stage. I can link the logger to a mobile lte router but not to site router. It seems like others have mentioned that the firewall is blocking connections to the sunsynk servers that the logger and portal connects to.

I have two Sunsynk 8kW units. The logger for the Master went down Monday 16 Jan at 07:10 and nothing I have tried had managed to bring it back online. The logger for the Slave continued to work. Both units worked per perfectly until Monday morning.

I can't believe that it's pure coincidence that two independent user's Sunsynk loggers have both 'died' at the same time on the same day.

I can find the logger via 10.10.10.1  via a browser, and also it's IP and MAC address on my network by using Angry IP Scanner.  The crazy thing is that one of the faulty loggers seems to be occupying two IP addresses at the same time (192.168.5.195 and 192.168.5.252 both with the same MAC).  The functioning logger only has one IP address (192.168.5.251).

As per Sunsynk's advice I tried swapping the loggers around on the slave and master inverters and the failure has now been caused to happen on the remaining functional logger, when it was attached to the master. I now have two kaput loggers.

I fully suspect that the new firmware (M 6.0.2.2 / S  1.7.2.4 / C E.4.2.) that was installed about a week ago on the Master and Slave inverters has somehow corrupted the loggers via the Master inverter.

I have contacted Sunsynk but have had no real response from them to resolve the issue.

Hi. My two loggers are still dead. No adult response from Sunsynk. They remain in denial. Suggest you email [email protected] to complain about your issue. You are only one of a multitude having this same dead logger problem. Its not your wifi network. Its all Sunsynk's fault. An update they pushed must have caused this to happen. Good luck. I've had no joy from Sunsynk thus far.

Just to confirm your theory - my logger went down Monday 16 Jan at 07h11 and can not bring it back online.

Can you login to https://pv.inteless.com/plants using your sunsynk login details

I see that there is a version difference between the sunsynk website and inteless. Sunsynk is still on v230106 and inteless is on v230117

This is who Sunsynk use for the sunsynk data logger. It may help if you mail them :)

I see they have an update as of 17 Jan

On the gateway info this is the software versions of mine

My logger also stopped working yesterday. I spoke to my installer and he said he has the same issues on some of his sites but not all. Go figure.

I doubt my issue is a logger fault as I can still connect to my logger directly. The logger communicates when connected to a cellphone hotspot. Similarly the portal web page is blocked via wifi router, however I can get access via cellphone hotspot. I suspect my problem  to be the router firewall. The router is one of these old Telkom issued d-link units running an ADSL line and requires a Telkom installed support password to get to the settings. The standard user account and password has limited access.

Hi Yellow Tape Measure, I am not too familiar with setting u or changing these settings. Could you possibly explain how to change these settings as the router user access doesn't allow for much access other than changing password and wifi id etc. Also I have read somewhere that these D-Links issued by telkom has limited access and settings can only be access by Telkom Technicians via a support user account on the router.

A friend of mine had the same logger/dongle issue. His issue is summarised and solved by this post: https://www.sunsynk.org/forum/techical-support/wifi-problem

Just reset my static IP address to unchecked and et voila I'm back online on both inverters. Thanks. Fixed IP addressing for my network clearly not the way to go. Its now randomly choosing its own IP on my network. This has also fixed the duplicate IP address issue I previously had and could not explain (4x IP addresses for 2x loggers). Have also updated the logger software. Don't see any difference.

The D-Link DSL-2740U is a bit of a steam engine, not much support for it, but it is capable of very basic firewalling:

In its default state, the Stateful Packet Inspection firewall ought to allow all outbound packets, which is what you want. You might therefore want to take a look at the screen above and see if anything has been set up to block non-standard ports. If you cannot see something like the screen above, then it could be that the ISP is blocking access to these configuration pages, so it's time to give them a call and ask them to assist, or throw the router out in favour of something more modern..

Alternatively, you could perform a factory reset and see if it helps to get it back to a reasonable state. This will mean that you need to set it up again completely, so you will need the DSL username and password, as well as the parameters for the wifi settings.

The blocking of TCP destination port 51100 could also be upstream at the ISP. You may want to contact their support desk first and check with them that they are allowing it, and not doing anything to block it.

Something to check on, as mentioned by @TimCam is that the wireless network is set up on the router to use WPA2-PSK and not WEP for security.

The last thing that you can try is to simply replace the router. This may be an opportunity to actually improve the wireless in the home too, as the N300 wireless standard is also a little long in the tooth, and upgrading to the newer AC standards may be desirable. Something like this comes to mind: https://www.takealot.com/tp-link-archer-vr1200-ac2100-wireless-dual-band-vdsl-adsl-gigabi/PLID72667595

Good luck, and please let us know how things pan out?

It wont be under the firewalling options. It is a setting on the wireless security

I have a mikrotik and have to disable some of teh security mechanism's for a lot of iot devices to work as a lot of them do not handle the auto negotiation very well.

EAP should never be enabled in home networks at it is very unlikely you will have enterprise style auth options available.

WPA is older and more widely supported.

Also sometimes offering both aes ccm and tkip also causes negotiation problems.

The other things to also check is to make sure your access point is setup to a country specific standard. If you set to ALL channels, so clients that will only talk on legal channels will not connect as the channel that the ap listening on is outside the range

Last thing to make sure is that cts/rts is enabled, esp on the 2.4 band as there can be a lot of interferance. Cts/RTS will help a ton.

Most isp's do not block any incoming connections, but a lot of the cellular isp's do not allow any incoming connections. You have to sometime change to a different apn to get incoming connections.

Thank you gents, your info is much appreciated.

I am trying my best to encouraging client to upgrade router but he is stubborn and doesn't want to spend. He is happy to keep his old router and not have remote monitoring. Sometimes you just let things slide. I will attempt the above when he calls me out again for one or other issue.

Hi

I recently had an 8kv Sunsynk inverter installed and after about 2 weeks the data logger stopped working, no lights on the logger at all. completly dead. When trying the same logger in another unit it works and even tried using a different logger in my unit it is dead, no lights at all.

Tried a factory restet / reboot and still nothing, any idea what this could be? Maybe the comm port?

Hi Everyone

just had batteries and Sunsynk inverter fitted. I was faced with the same connection issues as a lot of other folk on here seem to have and no matter what I, or the fitter did, the only way I could get WIFI was via my phone hot spot. I finally found a solution so am sharing as this may be useful to anyone else with connection problems.

I live in rural Wales and my home wifi is national broadband. This alone did not give a strong enough wifi throughout the house, so is boosted by a Deco unit with satellite Deco hubs throughout the house, my wifi strength is spot on so I knew this was not the issue.

SOLUTION, The Deco allows for an ISO to be set, this allows a devise to be wifi connected to that circuit alone and not included in the wifi circuit with all the other items connected in the house, which is typically everyone's phones TV's etc ect. This was an instant fix and the inverter is now happily connected to wifi.

I took a look at other routers / wifi boosters on line and most have this ISO function included so could hopefully, as with mine be the fix lots of folk seem to be looking for!

All the best everyone.

Hi Clive

I'm getting frequent unpredictable inverter connection failures with direct router connection. It was a bit less frequest but still happening a wifi extender closer to the router.

However, it becomes stable when I put an ethernet cable from the extender into the router and don't use the inverter's wifi. It seems to me that any direct inverter wifi > router or extender is sometimes unreliable.

I will go back to an inverter > ethernet cable to extender > extender wifi > router  setup.

How stable is your setup working now?

I previously had a problem with am analogue clamp signal cable being corrupted in the inverter by strong battery cable electromagmtic interference. That was solved by changing to a digital signal connection. Overall, I suspect that the wifi part of sunsynk inverters is not properly shielded from the large fields induced by its internal battery and output cables.

Yours

Andrew
