City of Joburg - Switching to prepaid

Because it is a stepped rate and I use very little power over summer and more over winter. I but the maximum amount without going buying power at the higher rate and stock up a bit over summer so I don't have to buy at the higher rate over winter. Almost 30c extra per kw/hr when you go from level 2 - level 3 so if you are using more than 500kw/hr a month in winter but less in summer makes sense to stock up.

Yes. You can build up your credit. But you need to buy some every couple of months. So you can end up with quite a large credit.

The first block used to be 0-500 and I would usually be under the 500. But I bought 500 each month, and then if we went on holiday there was nothing to worry about.

  • I would save up and get an Efergy (or other brand) monitor. They use a (CT) clamp that goes around the input wire on your DB board - so no cutting. It's a lot easier than installing a smart DB switch.

The R/kWh is controlled by NERSA, whereas the Service Charge and Network Charge are not, so CoJ has been bumping these up at a higher rate.

I'm not sure about this. I think Nersa control the price that the municipality pays to Eskom. Compare COCT and COJ tariffs, they are quite different. COCT have already stated that they are not passing the full Eskom increase on to the households they supply.

The monthly flat fees are high in COJ, and are really why it's cheaper to go pre-paid.

Nersa controls the R/kWh that CoJ can charge.
Nersa does not regulate the service & capacity charges:

This allows CoJ to charge very high service & capacity charges (relative to other metros).

R825.60 per month on post paid just to be connected 🤬

Yes this is fake as correct. Each munic do set their price. Just look at Ekurhuleni giving 100kWh for free on a specific tariff plan. Tshwane do not offer it and I doubt COJ give it. Then the actual rate and even the blocks and each blocks price is not the same. Easy to confirm by looking at each metro's website.

Just looking at the graph from system32. The 1st 100 units for CoJ is R2.10 a unit. Tshwane is R2.41 for the same block.

I did mine about 3 years ago, I had to go in to my local office, fill in the form, pay the money and wait in the que.

Was relatively painless but did take a few hours. Go in the middle of the month when it is quieter.

However, it does look like from the website that you can now submit the application via email and can convert up to a 3-Phase 80A connection.

This is for City of Johannesburg connection only:

The fully completed and signed application form as well as the supporting documents mentioned in the guideline can be submitted to Customer Services via email (in PDF format). Should the supporting documents not be submitted, it will result in a delay in processing the application. Please use the email address for the Region in which the property requiring the service connection is situated."

FYI.. I emailed my application and supporting docs to my regional email on the 3rd and got a response yesterday:

Dear Valued Customer,

Your application has been processed. The notification number for you application is XXXXXX

A quotation will be available within 15 working days, upon acceptance of the quotation, your account will be debited with the full amount displayed on the quotation, for payment purposes.

Thank you for utilizing the regional email service.

So I just went and did my conversion application today, what a nightmare at those offices, anyway I got it done in around 2 hours (the lady helping me took tea when I was next at 9:15am 😜) at a cost of R1250 - so they did mention that it’s the city’s year end next week so systems will be down and it could take up to 21 days for them to come out and convert me.

im reading the thread and saw trickle feeding? How and why is this done?

@Raiden2912 I gave City Power a call today. The lady I spoke to says you need to have a CP call logged for the installation even though the application has a reference and order number. No one mentioned this to me. Anyway she logged the call and gave me a CP number. You might want to give them a call and make sure your installation is also logged on the correct CP system.

hi, how did this go? looking at converting to prepaid (3phase COJ)

Sorry never saw the replies (not following the topic). I  got nothing via email and eventually went in to the regional offices this week and paid (should have done this as soon as I got the 700 ref number). The guy said CP will call me to make an appointment.

After reading slipx's comment I phoned CP now. The payment has not been allocated to my account yet (clearly no urgency on the regional offices' part). If its still not allocated next week then I'll have to go in again just so I can sit next to them to make sure they allocate it.

Ok let me call them. This is going to be painful

Update... I'm being sent from pillar to post between City Power and City of Joburg. It seems their systems cant talk to one another. CP is insisting that their system does not show my payment for the meter installation and telling me to go speak to COJ. COJ is insisting that my payment is showing on their side and that the problem is on CP side. I offered to provide the receipts to the CP call centre but they are not interested... so now I'm stuck between the two and of course they are not prepared to talk to one another.

I've enlisted the help of my ward councillor to help; my last resort.

Still not installed. I was referred to the local City Power office to escalate. They don’t answer phones so had to make a trip to the depot.  Apparently the contractor could not find my address. Gave them my number and I’ve been waiting a week for the call to install.

Got my ciu-ph04 yesterday and is now activated. I battled to load vouchers just to find out my meter wasn’t registered correctly. That is now sorted. The actual CIU is installed in my garage which means every time I need to recharge I will need to go into my garage and input the voucher. I moved the device into my house but it couldn’t connect to the main board outside, According to the coj contractor I need to move the CIU onto my DB board as apparently it doesn’t play nicely with inverters. So have to get my electrician out to move it. Based on the attached it seems to be true….not sure if anyone has had similar experiences.

So this workaround with the inverter doesn’t work…going to get my electrician to connect it to the DB board my worry is now I have run out of electricity and I’m hoping it doesn’t give me issues when trying to recharge

So this workaround with the inverter doesn’t work…going to get my electrician to connect it to the DB board my worry is now I have run out of electricity and I’m hoping it doesn’t give me issues when trying to recharge, tried at my neighbors and that also didn’t work

Got it working and connected to my DB board. Funny story, using one of the banking apps to recharge it SMS’s you a number of ‘vouchers’ those vouchers aren’t actual vouchers you need to go back into the mobile app to check the voucher number. I now have R700 worth of prepaid electricity…let’s see how long that last with it charging my batteries🤦🏼‍♂️

Hi I had the same meter installed. I had a plug installed before the inverter so there are no communication issues with the meter.

When purchasing using the FNB app the sms contains the voucher number.
