Geyserwise element Vs Standard 2kw Element

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

im looking at a few options for my Geyser element and came across the geyserwise which is quite popular and which a lot of people recommend, however I also through my research have spotted standard 2kw elements at a fraction of the cost, what is the benefit of the geyserwise element? Does it warrant the cost ? Roughly R2k Vs something like this?

is it possible to use the Geyserwise element without the geyser connected to a solar panel? I don’t have essential Vs non essential loads….

Geyserwise PTC element uses both AC and DC supply. You can use both at the same time or one at a time and yes you can use the element without the geyser being directly connected to the solar panels. In my set up, the AC supply to the element is controlled by CBI Astute smart controller, connected to the DB supply. The DC supply is controlled by SONOFF to switch ON/OFF a contactor that is connected to the battery bank, 48v

Huh?????  You have an awfully large thermostat.  😅  It would do nicely as a self-defence weapon.  That clobbering tool is not a thermostat but a PTC element.  The new thermostat is a very small device with thin wires that gets inserted into the hollow tube in which the old thermostat was mounted.

If you want to fit that PTC element you would need to drain your geyser (at least partially).

While draining the geyser, you might as well turn it on its head and mount it outside if you haven't yet. Outside will save you some cupboards when the geyser bursts. And I am confident that you increase the hot water capacity when the geyser is standing upright vs on its side.

Did you change your element to the 2kw Geyserwise?

I changed to a 1.5Kw Geyserwise, dual supply. it uses 800w when being powered from DC and 1500w when using DC or you can use both supplies simultaneously and get just over 2kw if you want to quickly heat up the water. I only do that when I have excess solar and my batteries are full. I switch the DC supply on at midnight, the water is nice and warm in the morning and my gas water heater doesn't need to boost the temperature at all. Now I'm only using the gas for cooking, too much information hey! I get so excited talking about my system 😂

The end results are very rewarding. I want to reach that stage myself , I am considering  replacing the 3kW element with a 1.5  sometime in the future. Mostly to play nice with other loads during PV hours. At 3kw with a 4.6kw PV array , you can basically  have the 3kW geyser on and nothing else , and only for limited periods.
