SmartDeyeDongle for 5kW/8kW/16kW single phase Deye/Sunsynk inverter available for order

Featured Replies

What you need to have already:

  • You need to be running a 5kW/8kW/16kW single phase Deye/Sunsynk inverter, Master & Slave configuration supported.
  • 3 Phase Supported   (3Phase inverters not currently supported)
  • You need to run your own home assistant (https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/) on an old PC/VM/Laptop/Rasp Pi or similar must support 64bit. (I even managed to get it running on a netbook from 2010 that does not support UEFI boot, works great for home assistant).
  • You need to have a 2.4GHz wifi network at the inverter with reasonable network coverage.

Not included (must supply your own):

  • You need to have an old micro-USB (type B  )   phone charger to supply power, even if it is a slo-o-o-ow charger, 500mA it is fine. These are still common even today for most electronic devices

SmartDeyeDongle Version 2

Price=R700 (EFT) + Courier(R100)/You collect(free)
Comes with RJ45 network cable (30cm)  that has been plugged into an inverter and verified to be working without issues. Also protected with a heat-shrink cover.
Shipping R100 via The Courier Guy (3-4 business days economy, but most of the times they deliver the next day)
Plug and play device for home assistant that allows most settings on the inverter to be changed via UI/automations.

Please note that the firmware is not related to the opensource versions. Considerable effort has been put in to pull all the important data from the inverter and to provide the user with the ability to change most settings on the inverter.

I have 4 dongles for sale. DM me if you would like one and we can arrange the rest

Quick update, Master & Slave on single phase systems will soon be supported. You will be able to order a Master/Slave pair of SmartDeyeDongles

I defined sensors that simply add Master & Slave sensor values (where applicable) and added a Combined Solar Tab where you can monitor the system and view graphs for the combined system (as if it was a single system). There is still a tab for Master and Slave Solar numbers and settings.

I am still planning on merging these UI changes & template entities back in to the https://github.com/tomatensaus/DeyeSolarDesktop

Automations to adjust settings needs to be performed on the Master inverter (unfortunately limited testing as this is a friend's production system).

Use case: I was able to write an automation that sets the system to "load priority" when the battery is above 90% and back to "battery priority" when below 90% or after 3pm. This helped to soak up every last bit of energy as we tried to schedule loads from 13:00 to 15:00, and ensured the system used an additional 1-2kWh from the panels that would normally be sourced from the grid. In the middle of winter every last bit of solar helps

Lastly my friend warned my that the wifi reception was poor in the garage and that his solarman dongle disconnects from time to time, I am happy to say I had no wifi issues in the last 2-3 weeks. The signal shows between 5% and 30% but I remains online, quite a pleasant surprise.

Do you still have stock?

Currently I have 6 built units that has been tested and verified. I build the hardware in batches and only sell units that passed testing.

Is this your own product?

Yes this is my own product you will not find something like this from anyone else. The firmware took me about 2-3 months to write (and test) and I have several test sites up an running that I monitor on a daily basis (was given access by those people). I currently only ship to locations in South Africa (with the Courier Guy). International shipping is on my roadmap.

Does it give me functionality to control my deye via HA?

Yes, it works for both Deye and Sunsynk and currently busy with the Sol Ark (development and testing).

You can change settings via the screens in the https://github.com/tomatensaus/DeyeSolarDesktop (or your own desktop if you want to build it)

You can also change the settings via HA automations, I have several sample automations that I share. As people request help with automations I add them to the opensource project. I find that most people have similar needs and if there is a sample automation it is easier to modify/tweak it for your specific need.

If so by when can you supply, and what are your details for payment

I still have 6 in stock. Not actively advertising as I am spending all my time building and testing a version for American split phase inverters.

If you order one I should be able to ship it within a day.

Payment via EFT, delivery via courier Guy (only in South Africa at this stage).

If you are close (to Monument Park, Pretoria) then collection (and payment via instant EFT/ FNB Geopay/Capitec  also an option). You can mail me heinz.meulke (at) gmail (dot) com

I have posted on Carbonite too, I have at least some level of cred score built up from past deals if that helps

https://carbonite.co.za/index.php?threads/smartdeyedongle-translates-your-deye-sunsunk-to-home-assistant-device.493083/

Thread was banned by the admins, apparently I need to be registered as a business and pay a R560 ($30) monthly fee . Well I was actually bit surprised, all modules sold out before they deleted the thread.

My online store is still needs a lot of work before it can be launched.

Awesome, I've sent you a message via Carbonite.

All the SmartDeyeDongles I had sold out (before Carbonite blocked my thread and requested I need to subscribe as a reseller/business).

Bastards.

Got mine setup very easily and it’s been amazing so far, thanks. Being able to automate the schedule via Home Assistant for example has been a game changer for me.

This looks good.

Can you tell me if the Enable grid charge is ticking the box in the first picture or the boxes in the second picture?

I've already got a USB to RS485 converter but I can not find the option to tick or untick the grid charge box in the 1st pic.

@Richyrich Yes both are available. It did put considerable effort towards getting all the available values on the inverter (reverse engineering what I could), wrote several workarounds for the bugs in the framework so it would work. There are something in the 140 entities (granted some are for the american split-phase setup and not useful to us in SA) I provided my workarounds to the opensource community to help them overcome some limitations.

My thinking was that I could save someone a couple of weeks of their time it must be worth something to them. Build the hardware, test it, polish the software so the whole experience is a smooth 10 minute setup.

But some people want to build their own dongle, that is cool too

Thank you @johanp for answering. I see you are enjoying the dongle you bought.

You can toggle grid charge and specify the Amps that the grid must charge. You could easily change these via automations if you need different profiles for different days

The time of use menu allows you to change the time (formatted as a time) power, SOC, and the charge settings you can get the exact same values than the time of use menu on the inverter. You could add an automation that changes your time of use for each day of the week, (eg my weekend usage is different than the week)

Where can I buy one of your dongles?

Unfortunately I am sold out and none of the local shops have any stock of the parts needed.

I ordered some samples from China and if they are any good I will order larger quantities.

I am working on 2 different designs, we will see where it leads. Realistically we are looking at the end of September.

You are welcome to subscribe to this thread for now. I will post updates.

Just a quick update.

This will become version 4 of the SmartDeyeDongle.

I am in the process of testing the initial batch of 5, thus far they are working fine. The next batch will be 100 and ETA looks like middle-to-end of September.

I will have to raise the cost of a module, the weak rand is also not helping me as everything is priced in USD. The price will be finalised with the next batch.

I have a list of people that gave me a firm commitment, those people will get a discount. If this is you, thank you for your support!

Features:

It allows any 38Pin Esp32 Dev board to be connected without any soldering and to be taken apart again (which means one day we might upgrade this have Zigbee support)

It will allow you to power it directly from the inverter 12V output pin terminal (pin 11,12 on my 8kW Deye inverter, imho looks neater) or alternatively a phone charger works just as well.

No Soldering and no RS485 TTL Module as they are proving to be a pain in the behind (as many DIYers can tell you).

3D printed cases will be an optional extra (I have realised that most people are pretty happy put it in their own little case).

Pre-made RJ45 cable will also be optional as most people have no issues to just cut up a network cable and they could then decide on the desired length.

Any available in stock?

Next batch is currently at customs clearing at OR Tambo. So stock will be available soon.

According to the courier (Fedex) the expected delivery date will be 21/09/2023 before 18:00. This is the best indication I have.
