Which Electricity Meters run Backwards

Featured Replies

Good Morning my dear Power Friends

Does anyone know which meters run backwards if power is fed back into the grid?

Attached is the meter I have

Thanks

That little ratchet symbol on the right below the last digit tells you it won't run backwards.

Eskom just entered the chat 🤣

Just what I needed - need my meter replaced, they needed an excuse to come out 😉

Yeah, there's approximately 0% chance that they will replace it with one that will reverse.

Well, they want us to enroll for resellers tariffs. Then you get a new meter, but you have to pay for it.

I can't say a way to even break even on reselling. I've said it many times, and I mean it: I would give my excess power away, I just don't waant to be charged for that. But that can't happen.

I looked at the City Power tariffs and I couldn't see a way to even break even on feeding back.

So @Mo786, just don't feed back. Unless you've read the tariffs that apply to you and you've done the sums and you're happy with the costs and the rewards. If you don't feed back then your inverter will get a bit of a rest when the battery is charged, and there's no harm in that.

This meter belonged to the stone age. EE was merged with GEC in 1968 according to Google. So this meter was made before that year. Amazing it is still turning. Based on the age my guess it will turn backwards as meters made in 1990 can turn backwards. The ratchet system I guess was only introduced later.

Wow then it's much much older than me! Impressive. Made in SA before the Chinese came in and killed quality producing factories

ESC was the old abbreviation in English before the name change to Eskom.

Som of the older spinning disk meters will run backwards but only until the second to last digit reaches 0. Thereafter it sticks to 0 while the last digit keeps on running backwards.
