100kW ATESS, 127kW PV Array & FreedomWon 40/32HV Lithium battery

This is a weird site because everything seems well specified except the Lithium battery bank...The client wanted initially a fully grid tied system & then was quick to change his mind, based on the massive frequency of power cuts we experience. 

The Humble little FreedomWon 40/32HV can pack quite a punch. It can deliver 100A continuously & 150A for a short time limit. It's nominal voltage at 410V gets a user to output levels of 41kW continuous & 61.5kW for a short period. 

So the plan on this site is to harness the suns magic as much as possible, but this is only short term because in the next month or so there will be another 2 ATESS HPS100s added as well as another 8 batteries added. 

So in the meantime this means single large motors only on one at a time but at 61.5kW peak limit available & 125kW Array means this system is more than capable until the heavy additions arrive. 

Another aspect is the fact that there are only panels facing East. The other machines to come will absorb the 254 x JA 550W modules to come on the Western side. 

Transformer based HV systems are a work of art...

Hi Steve i was wondering what would the final Dc-Ac ratio be and what is the tilt on those panels as it can't really be judged from the drone picture.

@TaliaBthe slope is gentle along the lines of 15°. The DC-Ac Voltage ratio or kW value I'm not quite sure what specific ratio you are looking for? The Array size is 140kW & the max Array size on the HPS100 is 150kW. 18 strings of 14s...250A MPPT. 686V Voc string voltages. 

The HPS can run at 110kW peak for 10mins & 120kW for 1 min. So it's a heap of a monster. This site is already ready for expansion of another 2 Inverters in parallel. Paired with smaller batteries & a Big Generator & another 150kW Array to the west. So will have 150kW+ on demand PV at midday. They into Food production so will just run fridges at light from battery power. The rest will rely on the Gene/ PV Array & the Batteries will absorb some of the shortfall. 

They also only startup for now one big machine at a time. So I think this is the best of many worlds of Hybrids. They mainly want to run high power machines by day & want to lean against a big Solar array to provide that power. The batteries to absorb the Big ripples of shortfall should it be required. 

The Generator will run on the very poor light days. 

Must admit a very interesting Solar case study where a large battery bank is not a requirement.

Just want to compare the CL33 to your monster install was just wondering wat the Atess is capable of in solar array oversizing ratio. Schneider Electric recommends a maximum oversizing limit of 2.0.( double the kw ac output 60kw solar array) Higher DC ratios will require review by a Schneider Electric applications engineer.

This is big at the end of the project jou will have implemented an Meggawatt solution.What size generator are you installing? Great work @Steve87 hard work but all worth it in the end.

Thanks @TaliaBit's hard work fighting with 95mm2 Armoured cables but we getting smarter all the time & panel flex cables will be used especially for the Inverter connections. 

We encountered a weird problem with the FreedomWon, it had Sunsynk firmware profiled on the BMS. So we had to reach out to FreedomWon who, carried out the new profile change for us. The support guys have actually admitted that all the smaller than the 100/80 HV units come now standard from the factory with the Sunsynk profile. If the ATESS profile is needed one must request this via their support system. 

They carry out all their support via Team Viewer etc. A very effective way to conduct remote support. It took all but 10mins & we had the machine Producing 400V 3 phase AC power. 

The ATESS systems scale beautifully & one needs to have system designers & site consultation to see exactly what the power requirements are. The HPS models for example are all in one Hybrid Units. They are in 30, 50, 100, 120 & 150kW sizes. You can only parallel up to 4 inverters to grow to a Maximum in the case of the HPS150 to 600kW. So the HPS runs out of steam at 600kW. 

Then we have the PCS range & this is where ATESS continue with bigger scaling of power. The PCS comes in 50, 100, 250, 500, 630 & 1000kW. Once again you can parallel up to 4 to scale to what your requirements are. The design changes in the PCS range because the weight of a 500kW Transformer becomes crazy they then make their architecture modular. Up to the PCS250 the transformer is built in. Above that power level the other models required an External ATESS transformer. Also a Bypass cabinet because the PCS range of inverters are just Battery inverters. So only a Single AC port that is Bi-directional. So the PCS range can only work in one mode at a time. Either off grid or on grid. But it has not intelligence nor the switch intelligence to switch seemlessly. So the Bypass cabinet is very important because it integrates all the possible AC sources of power. See the Pic below of the Bypass cabinet of the PCS100. 

It can integrate a Grid tied inverters, Generators and Grid power. The both ATESS models support frequency shifting for the use of Grid tied inverters to create a Micro Grid. The ATESS external Solar Charge controller is also available in the Form of the PDB250 & the PBD350 which are 250kW & 350kW rated with 5 & 8 MPPTs consecutively. But a cheaper option is the Grid tied machines & perfect for already existing Grid tied infrastructure in most large commercial entities that may have already taken that step when the opportunity in the past presented itself. However, with our shifting energy needs to have battery storage I think it's perfect that ATESS has a product that is modular & one can build & design according to requirements. 

So in conclusion without making a long essay about it. The ATESS HPS can reach 600kW in a single system in parallel & uses the FreedomWon HV range of batteries. The PCS range can reach 4MW in a single system in parallel & uses higher voltage so uses the FreedomWon HV+ range of batteries. 

To answer your question on the generator required on this site, the HPS range can once again derate to whatever size generator is installed & when in Generator mode will protect the generator if it is smaller than the HPS size & will not draw more than the Generator requirement. At this stage we have not been provided the Gene details yet.

This is what 1MW looks like on paper when scaling the PCS500 range. You will notice the external transformer in this situation. The PCS1000 which is 1MW would be able to service such a design also but this is just an illustration. Also find attached the Bypass cabinet architecture diagram...

Another ATESS HPS100 (100kW) inverter added and another FreedomWon 40/32 HV added. Bringing the plant to a peak capacity of 200kW Power plant!! More than enough power to run the entire load as essential in this food production factory. The ATESS equipment can be paralleled by up to 4 machines to reach your power requirement.

@TaliaBit's a great machine to work with. I have found it to be one of the most robust of machines I have worked with. This company has a bright future ahead of them...the large HV Hybrid market has been awoken & I see there are others out there like the Growcol Hybrid as well but I have zero point of reference except the ATESS for now.

@Steve87 thanks for documenting this. People are impressed by the scale but what impresses me more is the successful coupling of the grid-tie inverter onto the HPS.

Does one have to install an energy meter on the output of the grid-tie inverter so thet the HPS 'knows' what is load and what is grid-tie generation? and then performing frequency-shift control (Much like a Victron approach if you have experience with AC-coupling and victron)

Or did you do it all in software with a 3rd party EMS that reads the grid-tie, reads the HPS and does the magic in software?
