June 19, 20215 yr Hello All, Does anyone have any experience discontinuing their Eskom service? I've written their customer service email twice for information on doing so for our rural location but get no response. With the PV, batteries, generators we have installed over the past 9 months it's no longer necessary to pay the exorbitant monthly transmission fees to have them as a backup. Thanks for any help.

Hi David. Try Gladys at Eskom. She assisted with my downgrade from 3 phase to single phase and very efficient. [email protected]
June 19, 20215 yr @Leshen, what was the reason for downgrading from three phase to single phase, I have three phase and except for the standard home user charge of R148 plus vat, there is no additional charge, this is in Cape Town

I have never needed the other 2 phases which saves me around R300pm.
June 19, 20215 yr Author In case you're curious, we pay R69.50 per day for admin and network charge before we pay R1 for electricity. So I decided to invest in myself as a more competent service provider than Eskom.

In my experience you will never get your deposit back from these people so just stop paying your bill and they will eventually cut you off. Then just ignore them and after a while they will stop bothering you.

June 20, 20215 yr Tell them you are moving, and need the services stopped. Its the easiest way and they don't argue.

One thing that you may not be aware of: I was also a 3 phase Landrate (rural) user, paying about R2000 for connection before any usage charges. There are prepaid options "LandLight 20A" and "Landlight 60A" that provide single phase power with no fixed monthly charge. The rate per kWh is much higher (about R5) but that is still a lot less than diesel, with the advantage of not having to start / maintain your generator. One caveat: with the new ESKOM proposals that there should be a connection charge for all customers, perhaps this will no longer be true. As for your original question: I sent them an email and eventually (about 6 months) got a response. Then they sent a bunch of jokers round to change the meter - they changed the 3 phase x 40A meter to a single phase (60A) pre-paid, but left the 3 phase transformer on the pole, with 40A breakers. That is the bad news. The good news is that they installed a prepaid meter with urban tariffs (R1.80/kWh) rather than rural (R5.50) so I have stopped complaining...
June 21, 20215 yr Author This response is excellent. Thank you for the response. It simplifies a lot of work required to get solar power out to a building with staff quarters without the exorbitant 3phase landrate charge.
