  1. You might not save to much going this way. Installers might get the equipment at a much lower rate due to dealer discounts Also for them to install equipment procured by yourself can also be problematic, should something go wrong it becomes a finger pointing exercise. Most of the decent installers wont even consider this option , they have enough work lined up to not even consider this. The money you think you will save by buying yourself will be used for the extra margin they installer will ask for the installation. They only way to try and save is to buy yourself and to DIY,
  2. TO be fair I think Axpert installs far outnumbers Victron installs in RSA, so one would then also expect I higher number of failures. Also people only ever come to this forum for assistance after a failure, so we hardly ever hear from the people that are happy with their Axpert installs.
  3. The problem is most installers wount be interested in touching another man`s install, especially a faulty one.

An Earth leakage trips if either the live conductor comes into contact with Earth OR if the Neutral conductor comes into contact with earth If the faulty timer somehow switches neutral to earth tripping all the circuit breakers in your DB will not resolve the issue. You will have to remove the neutral wires from the neutral bar one by one until you are able to reset the Earth Leakage device. But trip all the feeding CB`s first, a floating neutral from a live circuit can shock you.

  10. I have a business associate who recently acquired Victron equipment. Its installed and looking all pretty at his house. But now he says he is having a problem getting any power from the Panels . Suspect a software setup issue that he is missing He is the CEO of a semi large electrical consulting firm. (Obviously not specialising in solar systems 🙂 ) A good contact to have Anybody here like Plonkster who would be willing to give a call and see if you could possibly assist of the phone ? My usual contact is out of the country I would be forever grateful
  11. The operation of a circuit breaker will not be influenced by its orientation (the tripping mechanism will easily overcome gravity 😀). In specific applications circuit breaker are installed horizontally like low voltage motor control centres with rackable switchgear buckets. For distribution boards they are installed vertically with the ON/ LIVE / CLOSED position at the top and TRIPPED/OFF/ISOLATED position at the bottom. The is mayor safety issues as you cannot create confusion - looking at the board I must immediately know the status of the disconnecting device.
  12. I think is mainly about the cost. If you look at Large Lead Acid battery installations with high ISSC ratings even a "small" 40 A circuit breaker is "BIG" in physical size and then also relatively expensive. Descrimination DC 24-48V.pdf
  13. Sean is correct, the load current will be closer to 37 A. 40 A circuit breaker should be sufficient for a resistive load A 4 mm2 cable will be undersized. A 6 mm2 copper cable could be suffiecent depending on the length of the cable. I attached a few tables to assist, please note there are other correction factors that also needs to be applied to these ratings. Abedare used to have a nice download for a book called Cable Facts and Figures, but since they were bought over by the Chines they have gone down sadly I attached it as brochure 653 brochures_653.pdf

The only advantages that a circuit breaker presents (talking specifically about MCB`s) is that they are convenient in that you can visually see which breaker has tripped and then to reset the breaker you simply flick a switch. But in DC applications where you have batteries with extremely high short circuit currents the breaking time of the correct fuse is unmatched by a circuit breaker. From a safety point of view fuses are the way to go if they are specified correctly and installed correctly. Circuit breakers contacts can also weld together and then your cables becomes a slow blow fuse

This is always going to be an issue with single string (series) solar panel installs due to the fact that the difference between the short circuit current and maximum rated current is very close to each other, making it almost impossible for a protection device to discriminate between an operational condition with high load and an actual fault condition This was discussed in the past when someone asked how to size the fuses for PV strings

    I dont think that electro magnetic interference is the main concern here. The problem comes in when you have cables with different insulation resistances in the same wireway. Running a router 12 V power cord up to a router/modem with a network cable is perfectly safe as CAT 5/ CAT6 cable is rated for 48V . But a network cable running with a 240 VAC cable poses a safety hazard As long as all the cables in the wireway has a minimum voltage rating higher than the highest voltage level in the wireway it should not be a safety issue.
  18. Nice Super_Mil Im suprised Silver didnt mention that your electrician missed the regualtion than your are not allow to have AC and DC cables in the same wireway.
  19. I’m not 100% sure if this was meant tongue in the cheek or slightly serious ? For an off-grid install I think he made good decision with that gear. Price wise would Victron even come close price wise ?
  20. For reference SANS 10142-1 section 6.1.10 Conductors that form part of a d.c. installation shall not be run in the same wireway as conductors that form part of an a.c. installation.

  23. NRS is not a standard its a SPECIFICATION That was prepared mainly by ESKOM members. In the past the NRS spefications could be obtained from SANS but last year they took it away and now you have to pay ESKOM to get a copy. Why NRS 097-2-1 was issued:
  24. SANS 10142 compliance is required by law as it has been prescribed by the OHS Act and falls under the Department of Labour: I will reserve my personal view on the COCT requirements ....
