Alerts and Solar Scam Queries

Starting this thread as an alert area for known scams and bad actors targeting South Africa. We're seeing a massive uptick in these atm.

Instead of littering many threads, hopefully this can serve as a common discussion thread. Some of you guys know the legitimate suppliers, also what is plausible, what's not.

Artists Against 419 has a project tag for solar and generator scams, ZAShed. Some of these scams concentrate solely on solar and generators, others mix solar and generators with other scam baits.

This scam actor is extremely well known, scamming with pets, livestock, A4 paper, shipping containers etc, also the old black money scam.

He also has his own project tag, DogGone.

More info is available to any law enforcement official.

This scam is attributable to the syndicate that the previous scam actor belongs to. The syndicate is labelled as Dog2Gone.

Here the scammers chose to mix their generator scam with a shipping container scam, another popular scam in ZA.

This scam mixes used auto spares and engines (content stolen from the legitimate Engine Den in Pretoria), with smaller generators.

Note: This is not to be confused with Jap Engines , Jap-Euro. No doubt the name the scammers chose was to cause exactly such confusion and steal some credibility.

This scam is related to the Dog2Gone syndicate mentioned previously as well. It shows the progression of scammers cashing in on the load shedding crisis. The template is identical to the one used for https://www.japan-engines.com and https://www.premiumenginesauto.com, only the generator section has been added to https://www.engineandgearboxauto.com

A terrible trio from the Cameroon:

Content is stolen from other businesses, prices knocked down.
It's rather funny recognizing some of the FAQ stuff as originating from poultry scams.

Hi there,

I am new to this forum and would like to ask if any one know if this is a Scam or not.

https://tomu.co.za/products/livoltek-all-in-one-energy-system-5kw-hybrid-inverter-5-12kwh-lfp-battery

i have looked the manufacturer up on internet and they seem like a good battery/inverter solution- reviews and a local website for south africa as well.

Just now sure on the Company Tomu.

I would also like to know if anyone has used this provider or know if its safe to use:

https://origis.co.za

They have a few reviews on hellopeter, but all positive reviews are from the same day. Domain name has been recently registered (redacted whois information) but website footer claims to be around since 2021.

I see all three domains are registered with 1-Grid - I’ve sent a pm to one of their guys to investigate

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 6 months later...

Another one.

https://clean-energyrsa.co.za

The physical address doesn't have a street number.

The prices are too good to be true.

Sense of urgency on the website....(only 4 left etc...)

The guy that I called, says that products can't be viewed because they renting a small space somewhere, they'll have a physical store next year....

This one deserves a special mention.

They became thesolarguys.energy which saw many victims. Also some nasty messages and threats sent, resulting in a SAPS case of fraud and intimidation.  The domain was put on hold (suspended) at Godaddy.

Now they're up again with the same website with a new domain name and a new fake address:

The Solar Shop
https://www.thesolarshop.shop
316 Stateway, Welkom Central, Welkom, 9460
Screenshot2024-08-15at23-17-20aa419Snapshots.thumb.png.960d80bab98c1720c9dfc7abf9ce1139.png

It's one thing being scammed. But when scammers double back, threaten to harm you and/or your loved ones for exposing them, it's next level. It's just a testimony to the types these are.

I will pop in at that address today.

If the address is fake then who ever is living there has no idea of it.

You don't have to have a physical address to run a scam operation

@Virwat take some petrol & a match with you 😄 Just joking...We can laugh & identify this is a scammer but the scammers work with the laws of averages. It's an imperfect hit rate but it works. For every say 400 persons reached one poor sod will not suspect them & actually send money. That's what they work towards that one poor victim. So if that takes 2 weeks or 4 weeks the more people reached the more chance of fraudulent success.

I have seen even cautious people caught up & it's actually quite embarrassing for the poor victim & often they don't want to report it nor visit the Cop shop to lay charges & add to that threats that come through.
