Really the start option. The one light being off indicates it is defective.
It is also supposed to go in next to the mains isolator.
It is also dependand on whether you live in a high lightning area like the Highveld.
    Just google surge suppressors.

I have a 8kw Sunsynk and it kicks ass.
All inverters have specifications regarding the panel watts (not really relevant) and the maximum dc voltage (most relevant).  You need to do some reading on this topic on the forum.
It is also a good idea to get an idea of your consumption by measuring it.

Take note that switching power on and off also create surges.
On my photo (busy with some rework) you can see the surge suppressor. It prevented serious lightning damage in the db last season.

I have leds installed to indicate which circuits are live. As well all the switches have labels to indicate their functions.

Which 4kw inverter do you have? I don't think sunsynk has a 4kw inverter. Only 8kw, 5kw and 3.6kw inverters.
I have the 8kw sunsynk and run my whole house from the inverter. I have a 4kw geyser but also have evacuated tubes on my geyser. I also run my pool pump and well point pump, a 24000btu and 12000btu inverter aircon when it's very hot. My combined loads hardly ever go beyond 6kw though. I have pushed the inverter to see how it would cope but it just seamlessly blended from the grid anything over 8kw that was needed. Not really concerned about overloading if the grid is available. When there is loadshedding then I just need to make sure that my loads do not go over 5.328kw as that is the maximum that 3 pylontech batteries will be able to provide. I also try and manage it to well below this during loadshedding as I need to make sure that the batteries will last through the 2 hours of loadshedding.
I have 3 x 3.5kw pylontech batteries connected so use the batteries at night. It's not enough to carry me through a full night and the plan is to eventually add another 3 more batteries.
My system is running for 4 months now and has reduced my grid usage to virtually zero and already saved over R11k.

On a practical side we do the following to extend the low temperature in our Bosch A++ freezer:
Run it on the lowest temp setting (-26C)
We buy the Oasis water sachets (for runners) and freeze these to act as an ice reservoir when the power goes off. We take these with on our Kruger trips. Obviously not now 🙁
The kWhr consumption on normal fridge freezer units is so high that it pays for itself when upgrading to A++ equipment.
I follow these steps even though they are on a good backup system. As we all know backup systems can also trip or fail.
When the businesses were closed during lockdown we did not have a single power outage. Now that they are open it’s normal again to get outages.

I read an article which said 200mw of solar panels was exported to South Africa in 2019.
And that makes me wonder if somebody in the guvament is sitting with a calculator making sums as to how much money is slipping from their fingers foreva.
At 80% efficiency the municipalities might lose R272m every year at prepaid tariff of R2 per kwh. And Eskom will actually score zero income.
And guvament will lose R40m every year in vat from their real actual paying clients.
And this is but the tip of the iceberg which is on its way to meet the ANC Titanic.
I can see this can escalate to very high figures in a record time.

And that's why you go for the best warranties.
There's a huge difference between a one year and a five year warranty.
Apart from the lack of confidence a manufacturer has in the quality of his own product.
The only way we as consumers can make them see the light is by not buying their products.
Nobody will buy a car with a poor reputation. But we don't even think twice before buying an inverter with many reported problems...
    Why??

It is difficult to motivate solar financially. Even more so when you're slaving away 12 hours or more per day. And you will have 64 cloudy and rainy days every year - just plan your solar maintenance for then ..
Its rather like buying a car - difficult to motivate the purchasing price when you're a male (but boy we're good at supplying reasons why we must buy a certain model lol).
Unless you do it when you're young and you'll be living in the same house till you die, payback is not going to happen.
Its all about convenience and security and looking after your family.
And when Eskom goes on stop off course.

This must be a joke. A really big problem is the culture of non-payment which was cultivated by the ruling party. How about we create a PPP to supply Soweto exclusively ....
Who can expect payment on time for services rendered in this time. Will it come from Eskom who is totally poor?
And minista Mantasha is not to be trusted. He is just trying to swing the spotlight away from him at the Indaba.

There is a lot of reading to do to catch up on the topic.
First step is to determine your real power requirements. It is cheaper to buy lower power consumption household goods (with new warranties) than to go for a big solar investment.
If you go too small and need to go bigger you will lose at least 50% of your initial costs when trying to sell it in the used market. So an initial R20k inverter could have been bought for R30k.
A big concern to me is the message from prez Ramaphosa that an instruction was given to Guvament to get the solar rollout going. We can expect many stupid regulations coming our way.

You cannot turn years of neglect round in a short time. The big coal companies have departed and so did their skills and capital.
The fact that Eskom have neglected to replace two boilers says it all.

I was looking at Eskom statistics on how many prepaid meters have been bypassed and it’s shocking.
There is a major culture of thieving amongst its customers.
Surely by now Eskom should have figured it out for themselves.
New technologies exists and anybody with a calculator should be able to figure the financial side out.
But then, we are talking about the ANC voters. People with inalienable rights and privileges.
My town has now started loadshedding areas where the “voters” are reluctant to pay. I’ll watch the process as it unfolds. Should not be too long before the town hall is burnt down.
I don’t know who else saw the extremely low price per kwhr the Zimbabweans have been paying for electricity until recently. It was obviously a ploy to keep them quiet and happy.

Do you have a auto change over switch? If not that can be a option so that your power just drop back to grid when a inverter trip occurs, that-way you can deal with a tripped inverter later but at least your not in the dark.
