Gabriël
now they really start using dangerous [but real!] language "I’m anticipating lights out within the next 60 days. Government will have to declare a state of emergency.” ok i know it is a month old, but still interesting https://citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/1803613/eskom-on-ropes-as-lenders-refuse-backing-unless-is-corruption-resolved/ and http://www.poweroptimal.com/350-increase-decade-expensive-electricity-south-africa-compared-countries/ i wonder how many eskom employees voted here - it is from their web site
___
Dude, I've resolved for myself that step one is to get everyone a passport, and stash some money outside the country (not an easy task). I'm pretty sure nothing is going to happen and this is just some scare-mongering, but it pays to be prepared and you lose nothing otherwise. Waiting for one birth certificate, that should be here by month end. Passports apparently take about two weeks. Cutting it a bit fine if these prophets are right, though I am confident that they are not. Technically one should always have a valid passport, that's just common sense. So much more dignified than sneaking over the border on foot. SOLARWIND
Guest
Nothing will happen. Eksom will continue and the rains will return, you will not be invaded and Cyril will sort most Zuma drama out. See this has started: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-04-04-scorpio-breaking-eskom-wants-in-on-mckinsey-trillian-r1.6bn-state-capture-loot/#.WsXO5HpuaUk Ps. An Afrikaner got stranded on a deserted island. They found him three years later. The island had received somewhat of an upgrade since he landed there... and it sported (among others) two churches. When they asked him about it, he explained that one of them is the church that he used to go to... Chris Hobson and Van theplanman

Gabriël
well, even the chaldeans, nevermind satan himself, had a role to play in redemptive history - so die afrikaner moet nie 'n groot kop kry nie - look how dismally the 'chosen' nation failed their prophets. but lets give the stranded guy a name, if his role model was robinson crusoe would that make him robert coetzee? ___, Clint and Chris Hobson

seant
But then if wind and solar makes power so cheap then why are the turbines down PE side all standing ,and it's not for a lack of wind. A Friend went hunting in that neck of the woods and for the 10 days he was there all the units he saw were still like they had the break on. Too cheap, And in Zim there was a businessman that was locked up as he apparently pocketed some US $54 million of funds destined for a solar farm. Or there is a dispute on payment, as Eskom cannot pay. Or maybe installation is not up to standards. Or they are not SANS or SSEG compliant. (cwl) I go for it is too cheap so they don't use them unless there is strain on the grid. 33 minutes ago, gabriel said: ... c'mon, give me a break ... I, as you, are getting rather tired with PC. Therein my favorite quote: PC is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end. SWAMBO (In this case I do NOT Obey) is regularly on my case when I just ask a question direct vs spending "hours" on finding the right words. So once I asked her: So, if I ask a group of friends a question, I get answers near instant. Why is it if you ask the same group, with a PC question, do they take weeks to respond? ... I am ok, was only in hospital for two days. (I still don't Obey.)

Gabriël
yes yes yes Unlock the regulatory constraints preventing customers from being part of the solution through small scale embedded generation (SSEG), like rooftop solar installations at homes, businesses, warehouses, factories, mines, and farms. Promulgate the draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019 and accelerate the procurement of the stalled expedited Rounds 4.5 and 5, and further rounds, of the Renewable Energy IPP programme for new utility scale wind and solar PV power plants. Commence the procurement and construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and associated infrastructure for gas engine, OCGT, and CCGT flexible power plants at port facilities in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and Western Cape to back up variable renewable energy. Commence the procurement and installation of strategically positioned battery energy storage systems (BES) for voltage and frequency support, black start, and load shifting. To supplement grid power, facilitate micro-grids with renewable energy, battery energy storage, and diesel and gas generation for industrial parks, campuses, housing estates, and rural villages. Unlock the policy, regulatory, and legal constraints which prevent municipalities from generating electricity for their own residents and customers, or from contracting with IPPs to supply electricity to municipalities. see https://mybroadband.co.za/news/energy/299582-warning-eskoms-problems-much-bigger-than-what-you-are-told.html?source=newsletter Antony, ibiza and Fuenkli
georgelza
... what I am about to say is not going to slow my decision down to install a solution at home... But wonder if the guys with fingers on button is not yet again manufacturing problems to get government to give them money... previously we seem to always have problems just before a holiday season, just before a NERSA application, this time it is just before they go bankrupt / April and want bailout funds from Goverment. Whats the status of those external contractors/engineers that suppose to come in and have a look/investigate, of course wonder how much information they would get in any type of timely fashion. ___
I don't buy it. It's months before an important election, with the new incumbent desperately seeking to reverse the downwards support trend. Eskom would simply not be allowed by their main shareholder to pull such a stunt. What is however quite possible is that with all the bad news... the people on the ground is just that little bit less likely to work overtime, do a bit more to do it right, and so forth, causing things to accelerate. I always bring up the example of World War II. In Germany, right up to the end of the war, they had electricity, the trains ran, the phones worked. Then the war ended. You'd think things are looking up? You'd be wrong. We thought things are looking up when Zuma was ousted. Far from it. Antony
