How many of us have thought about sharing our systems with a neighbour, at the very least with a couple of security lights running off your own system? Reason I mention this, is because really and truly solar as an option is not cheap for everyone and if we shared a line at least on a neighbour who does not have the same wallet, this makes our neighbourhood or more households more secure. Food for thought. It may even be with a stand-alone street solar lights. We also need to be considerate of elderly folks whose limited pensions do not enable them to think beyond their daily meal.

Yeah always good to share, but... municipal by-laws prohibit it.

Unless you live in certain areas where it is done openly 50 or more connections to one pole, and the residents don't care about by-laws and no-one pays anything anyway.

If am sharing my wall with my neighbour and we put up a stand-alone solar light, I don't think the municipality can stop us. This is put on our own property, not on the street. If someone is upgrading their system, they may consider helping their neighbour out with their older system or sell it at a giveaway price.

If there is a grid failure or if there is power failure for days or weeks  I will be more than happy to help keep neighbors fridges cold and cell phones charged through the day  . 

And if the municipal don't like it that's there problem 

I live in #6 in my street. We used to have a very nice man living at #8. The lady at #10 is... financially stressed. She owes the City a lot of money and gets cut off at regular intervals. #8 used to sling an extension lead over the wall so she could keep her fridge and a couple of other items going. 

I admired his unsolicited display of good neighbourliness.

That’s precisely the mindset I mean & grew up with, life ebbs & flows & helping each other is a good thing. Tomorrow tables may turn.

Perhaps he got "favours" in return 😆 But seriously, we have a tenant that I've run an extension cord to. It's on a 600w UPS so it limits the amount that can be drawn before it shuts off. IE charging laptop, some lights or TV is fine...

I got tired of my neighbor's generator running permanently, during loadshedding, so that his wife can watch Netflix. I ran a lead under the wall and made him promise to only use it for wifi and a tv. At least now it is al lot more quiet.
