Help on Gas geyser suppliers

Featured Replies

Hi everyone hope someone could help me. Looking to have a gas geyser installed in my unit. Either a Rinnai or Paloma as the most reliable units.

Looking to connect it in series from my current 150lt electric geyser to the gas geyser from an installation perspective as the 150lt geyser is just to small for the household.

If anyone could help me with reasonable suppliers in JHB Midrand area. Some of the prices for installation of a 26lt geyser are over R40k which seems excessive.

Appreciate the help. You could pm me directly if the forum doesn't allow sharing supplier names on the posts.

Thanks alot for the help

Get hold of these guys for Paloma gas water heaters, they assisted me with mine last year and their installation quote was reasonable. Ended up doing DIY because I hate paying people for something that I can do myself

@PsyWulf just worried about running out of hot water two kids wife and helper. If two people have a shower the waters out. Was wanting to go slightly bigger and not worry about hot water shortage again.

Would a 20lt meet the home needs?

Thanks alot for the help

So the Liter capacity rating on Gas Geysers is the flow per minute

6l - tap

12 - 2taps / Shower

16 - Shower

20 - Shower + tap / bath

etc

I've got 20Liter units installed for Bathrooms on my house and cottage, only thing that is a bit of a niggle is a bath takes longer to fill up and it takes some adjusting to learn how to work the type of gas geyser playing with the hot water settings (i'm using constant-flow/instant heating/battery ignited)

As long as you have gas you won't run out of hot water basically

Your choice to go with 26Lt is perfect, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Trust me, I have one and no regrets, never run out of instant hot water and no restrictions on the number of people using a shower or running a bath.

A Paloma 26l unit is around R13500 from Give it Gas.

Also give Wendy a call from Ecoblue. Excellent advice and service with the best prices.

A 48kg gas cylinder lasted 13 months and we had a Paloma 26l unit with a controller. Set the temp to 48. Was in series with our solar geyser.

You can consider an Ariston 24l fan forced unit. G1 Gas in Centurion should be able to give you a decent price.

Dont go any smaller.

Remember the average shower head would be around 15l/min. Get a smaller shower head. Hans Grohe has their full range in a water saving option of 9l/min. You will be able to run 2x showers (18l/min( very comfortable. Only heat the water to the temp you require, dont mix in cokd water.

Thanks you everyone for the help on this topic... I would not have been able to make a good choice. Went with Paloma 26lt gas geyser from give it gas... Due to the demand stock is only arriving end of the month in SA. Hoping it will be installed by Sept. Will feedback after it's all done.

The give it gas team were excellent so far thank you @Leshen for the reference.

Hoping all will be smooth with installation and start up

Anytime. You won’t be disappointed with that geyser.

Could you please advice on your installer?

Just ordered the same 26LT Paloma and keen on getting a reasonable installer around the fourways/sunninghill area

Hi Miradii used the same installer recommended from ecoblue as they work with a plumber to tie in the geyser. Otherwise u have to get separate people to do the jobs which can be tricky.

The person who helped me is Roger

Had my Gas geyser installed today
Went with the 20L Fan Forced Outdoor Room Sealed unit from Dewhot. SKU OD20DH
Unit cost : R 13000
Gas piping and installation: R3100 (with COC)
Plumbing materials and installation R2200
2 x 19L Gas bottles R1900 including the deposit : R1900

The unit is using 220v AC - So the solar backup system is going to take care of power to the unit :)

Fun Fact:
I connected a AC power meter to my old geyser circuit the last few days just to verify the power needed to keep the 200L geyser with warm water
I left it over a period of 3 days to get some level of consistency of power over a 24h period. considering the load shedding schedules etc.
This was important for me to know what I ACTUALY use from Eskom to power my geyser before they disconnect it.

Consumption Electricity :
Sun: 19.9Kw pd
Mon: 20.1kw pd
Tue: 18.7kw pd

Think about the numbers +/- 20Kw per day - 600Kw less to pay towards electricity bill
My unit rate is around R2.00 per KW - this is R14,400 per year.
Sure, I will spend money on Gas, but less dependency on a single point of failure.

I can highly recommend my installer - ping me if you need details

Will post some pictures in the next week.

Hi @Scra. congrats on your gas geyser install. I am considering doing something similar but thinking about connecting the gas geyser in line with my existing electric geyser. Did you get rid of the electric geyser completely?

My thinking here is that i can user solar to heat up the geyser during the day for our evening showers and use gas to heat up for our early morning shower when there is no solar. my understanding is that the gas geyser reads the temp of the incming water and will only light the burner if its below the set temperature? in this case it shouldnt ignite in the evening (as the electric geyser water is still hot) but will use gas to heat up the water in the mornings?

Would like to understand more on this as the geyser is basically the only thing i am still using eskom for. 12kwh out of daily ave of 15kwh...

No, the old geyser is still there

What we did was : they installed a non-return valve on the hot water out of the elec.geyser - so that the hot water from the gas geyser cant go into the elec.geyser
the cold in to the geyser is closed with a valve. and the power shut down to the old geyser.

so basically the electric geyser is still usable when something had to go wrong with the gas, all i need to do is close the water inlet to the gas geyser, open the valve to the elec geyser and switch it on at the DB and then i can use the old geyser if i need to.

I dont think you will be able to run both in the same time, its not a bad idea, but i think you will burn gas for no reason, the water heats up in about 15-30 seconds max,
and its a fairly constant flow of hot water,

You can run both at the same time. My electric geyser is in series with 26L/m Paloma gas water heater and only use gas when the water from the electric geyser is cold. During the day, the electric geyser is powered from solar and gas is not used. The element gets switched off at 17H00 and the water is still hot for the evening showers. In the early hours of the next day, a bit of gas is used just to boost the temperature of the water coming from the electric geyser, for morning showers.

Good day. Apologies to revive an old topic. Good information never gets old I want to believe.

Did you have to buy any additional items to achieve using the Electric/solar geyser with the gas geyser.

I have recently installed a Rinnai 26L gas geyser and unfortunately did not think on connect the old solar geyser and the new gas geyser together until I read your post.

From Rinnai, after googling, it seems I have to buy an additional device called, Rinnai Smart Start unit. But it is bit pricey, around R8500. It's almost like buying another geyser.

I also came across a possible alternative device from Grundfos which is a bit more affordable than the Rinnai one.

Please advice how your set was achieved. Or if anyone has had experience with Grundfos as well.

Thanks in advance.
