PV Store: Scam?

Featured Replies

I emailed PV Store to order batteries and apparently their email address was hacked.....which resulted in me getting an invoice with a incorrect bank account details.

I have lost R60k and there is apparently nothing that can be done.

Anyone else experienced this?

Personally I would report it to the police and get a case number,  speak to my bank to find out about getting the transaction reversed and then speak to a lawyer about what the law says as I think that they may be guilty of negligence which resulted in your loss.

It is definitely not your fault that their email account was hacked, a letter from your lawyer to them may be sufficient to get an agreeable result.

Make sure that you keep all your communications with them where they say that there accounts were hacked. If you don't have anything in writing then I would try and get some confirmation in an email that there account was hacked as they will be the ones responsible for that.  If you have conversation in Whatsapp make sure you get screenshots of the conversations so that they can't go and delete old messages if they are self incriminating.

The company is legit... I cant speak for your transaction as per say but I ordered a battery online as they did not have stock in Cape Town. They transferred it from JHB quicker than they estimated and I collected from their branch here.

They answered their phones in both branches, have a physical office in a reputable office park and goods received quicker than expected. So for me, legit

With regards to your issue... That really sucks and I know it has been happening more than more. Not that it is an excuse on their side. In future, check your internet banking but I know Standard Bank has a feature that you can verify a bank account number prior to making payment. Also what has become very standard practice is to ask for a bank confirmation letter (although this could be faked easily too)

Is definitely not @Hackedoff 's fault that the PV Stores email account was hacked and don't see how he could have done anything differently seeing as the incorrect banking details were emailed to him from the PV Store email account.

As long as there are no extenuating circumstances I cannot see how they cannot take responsibility for the loss.

Is also one of the reasons that I do not do any online transactions via EFT, getting Credit Card transactions reversed is way easier.

I bought two systems from their Midrand Branch...Sunsynk 8kW, 16×455W and 2×UP5000s and the other was Luxpower and UP5000 for a backup. They are a Legit company and their Midrand office is fairly secure.

It sounds like an increasingly common scam hence why companies are insisting on confirming bank accounts before large transactions are made.

However it’s possible you got hacked instead unless there is sufficient proof otherwise.

In essence you were sold a cheaper TV by a “Game Employee” wearing a pink shirt in the mall parking lot and you want Game to be responsible.

Welcome to the scam capital of Africa.

I would not accept this. They were compromised, they should make it right. Unfortunately, if they can't keep their email secure, it speaks poorly for how the rest of their operation is run.

Who is your email provider/ISP?

This type of scam happened to my father last year, and my suspicion is that it's an inside job at the ISP.

I've seen this happen even with domains hosted on the Google mail servers, doubt inside job.

In order to pull this off at a mail server level the person needs to have total control over the outgoing queue, and probably would have to stop the queue to catch that one message.

This issue has not been resolved , a friend of mine placed an order today and phoned them to confirm banking details , then 2 mins later someone phoned him with a 'better ' price and sent a fake invoice/bank details to him. Be very careful folks ...

I checked through a company Gmail hosted email account after it had been hacked for a friend.

They had inserted a forwarding email address into the

Section in settings so that all emails sent to the company address were forwarded.

You may find that their emails are still being forwarded and the hacker is replying to emails sent to their address.

Yes that is a common method that I often see, but in the case I referred to that did not happen.

(In fact it is so common that on the mail server that I run I have a rule in place that alerts me for any forwarding addresses added.)
