Inverter purchase advise

Featured Replies

Good afternoon folks

I am buying my solar equipment this week. I was quoted R60 for a 8kw deye and 2 5.5kw voltage stage 2 batteries.

Voltex has a bundle deal for a 8kw Sunsynk and 2 5.5lw Hubble AM2s for R48k.

The Sunsynk is the old version not based of the 2025 Deye.

Would you advise that I rather get the updated 2025 version of the inverter or is there no material difference.

I have not had experience with the newest Deye, but on the older ones definitely a difference between Deye and Sunsynk

Deye App sucks

Installed both and Sunsynk definitely seems to work better and be more efficient especially back feeding to non essential loads

So generally I would choose Sunsynk over Deye same hardware different software

As for new model or old model, it will depend on your needs and setup

The newer version can take more solar power but if you don't need it then it doesn't matter

Also Sunsynk and I presume Deye has an even newer version just landed in SA

Wireless CT and one wireless smart switch and can add another 9 smart switches

About R 2 k difference in price between newer version and latest version i. e. Version 2 and 3

Voltex is selling all this stuff at close to cost or below cost to get rid of excess stock

They bought in to much stuff just before loadshedding ended

Speak to the salesman, they will split up those specials so you can get batteries from them and if you want newest inverter you can get elsewhere

Workout what the best price for you will be

It seems it is all about what one finds important. Choices. Some guys will not even look at the APP for a week or more. Others every 30min or hour. When we have full sunshine days I have no real need to look at the APP. I might even look more on the screen to get the value of PV yield for the day when I walk past my inverter when getting home at night. This tells me what my SOC should be.

I will be adding 12 620w panels to the inverter I don't need that many it's mainly for winter generation. Getting more than 2 batteries at this stage is also a waste because my geyser and cooking happens via gas. Pool, irrigation pumps usually run in mid morning in any event.

Do you perhaps have a link for the versions that just landed? I don't want to be obsolete stock.

Thank you for getting back to me.

I will probably want to monitor production, etc. I heard that the Deye Cloud is better than the ap they had before.

Talk to the people at The Power Forum Store (https://powerforum-store.co.za/collections/inverters?page=2) (the host of this Forum) they have some good prices on better inverters than the Deye/Sunsynk brand - e.g. Solis S6 Pro 8kW unit for R25 070.00 (VAT included).

Be very weary of "specials" on lithium batteries - there are various "lithium" chemistries in the market, and many of them are either pretty useless, or dangerous. Even so-called LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate chemistry) batteries are made with cells from three (or more...) wholesale suppliers (CATL, BYD and REPT...) that are not interchangeable - and the sad news is that even semi-reputable brands such as Sunsynk regularly swap cell chemistries so that e.g. model xxx made in 2024 is not compatible with the same model xxx made in 2025 or 2026...

Moral of the story: you makes your choice and you pays your price... or to state it in fancy terms: caveat emptor - Cheap Chinese products (such as the Deye/Sunsynk) are cheap for a reason...

I have been looking at the Solis for a long time. I was not aware that they are better than Deye/ Sunsynk. Not clued up with these things.

The batteries that I looked at are Hubble, Greenrich, Hina Ess and Volta stage 2 all 1c rated versions.

Well, as an owner of a Sunsynk, I can just say that I regret not having paid more cash for a Victron... But from what I've heard (no personal experience...) the new Solis S6 Pros are the best at the price - Talk to @Powerforum Store

I will give them a call in the morning. Thank you.

I have also been looking at Solis

But can't find enough info

What is the maximum AC pass through current?

Do they back feed to loads that are not on the inverter like Sunsynk does?

I can't find this info on data sheet or on manual

Edited by James 1

I did see this before, but no mention of the maximum AC pass through current

A very important factor when selecting an inverter

Also no mention of it been able to backfeed non essential loads without exporting

Also very important

I have the same questions about the Solis hence I am leaning towards the Deye or Sunsynk. Backfeeding to nonessential loads are critical for me. Its where the majority of my electricity cost are generated (pool pumps, irrigation, alternative water supply, etc.).

There's a bit of misinformation here.

Deye and Sunsynk functionality is exactly the same. Sunsynk is a rebranded deye. It's impossible that the Sunsynk will be more efficient in its feeding non essentials than the deye.

Secondly, the Deye cloud app is much improved and even better than the Sunsynk app in my opinion.

I have been told this by a different installer. He now prefers Deye as he supposedly receive better support as well.

I have heard that Solis do NOT do repairs on their inverters.

If it's their hardware issue, they replace the whole unit.

If it's a surge etc that caused it, which is very common, they simply refuse to repair.

If someone has insurance they claim, if not, you are on you own. This is a major downside.

@Powerforum Store can confirm if this is true?

The last Deye that I installed was 2023

Backfeed simply didn't work as effective as Sunsynk then

You could quite easily see it on the screen when non essential loads went on

It kind of worked but not as quick to respond as Sunsynk to non essential loads

That's not due to the inverter.

If it was an issue, it's due to the install or user error.

Possibly CT cable was too long or the like. Or shielded cable was not used to extend. When over a certain length then 3rd party energy meters need to be used, RS485

I have both and can use them and they use the exact same data.

The Deye giving only vts on the summary screen with no decimal is useless for lithium. The Solarman APP is miles better. Also as you will see on the APP download page how many people complain that the Deye is slow. Very very true. Also the graphs on the Deye I think is low grade with their lack of scroll or pinch zoom.

Just my personal 2c.

On Surge Damaged Inverters and Solis Approach

In cases of power surge damage very common in SA due to lightning grid instability , Solis maintains high brand standards and is generally reluctant to repair such units under warranty or even as a paid fix.

They have the technical capability, but repairing surge damaged inverters often risks incomplete fixes deeper, hidden component stress can lead to repeat failures later, similar to what some users report with repaired Deye/Sunsynk units multiple returns, escalating issues from original damage not fully caught, plus human error in assessment/repair.

Instead, Solis prioritizes replacement where possible especially for confirmed manufacturing defects , but for clear external surge events, they stick to policy exclusions apply as with every major brand no factory warranty covers lightning/power surges, accidental damage, or force majeure.

See Solis Africa/global warranty docs explicitly listing this. They won't routinely honor repairs on surge units because it could compromise long term reliability and brand reputation better to avoid creating a cycle of "repaired but still problematic" inverters. In practice from my client experiences and forum feedback.

For genuine faults quick swap out, often proactive Solis is your best option.

For surge external damage typically not covered, pushing to insurance claims which many SA policies handle well if SPDs were installed.

Occasional goodwill replacements happen if borderline or to uphold service levels, but it's not the norm or guaranteed.

This contrasts with some Deye/Sunsynk experiences, where repair workflows can lead to repeated fixes on the same unit due to incomplete surge assessments.

Solis's conservative stance helps avoid that trap.

Key reminder No inverter brand covers surges under standard warranty it's universal. Install proper multi stage SPDs AC/DC side, correctly rated and have good insurance. That's the real protection in our environment.

Solis's Tier 1 status shines through in reliability, low failure rates, and proactive engineering upgrades from dissected returns. For most buyers, the effective 10-year warranty via free extensions on majority SA sales plus swap out handling makes it a strong, low drama choice.

Thanks for a very informative reply listing the areas not covered. My experience with the Solis mini 4G over 5yrs was the best one can ever ask of an inverter.
