Sunsynk data logger connection issues.

Featured Replies

Good day all, perhaps someone can shed some light wrt my issue.

I recently installed a 8.8 Sunsynk with 2 x 5.5 kw hubbles, since day one random data logger offline? The data logger connects and disconnects at random. Wifi signal is good, router approx 5 meters away, and data logger shows good signal.

I cant determine where fault lies.

Any recommendations  would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Hi, Did you select the closest and strongest access point when you scanned for networks using the logger?  You may have chosen a further away one with less strength and the logger sticks to that one.

I had this issue with my Deye inverter and their data logger. Even though there was pretty good Wi-Fi signal it would still go offline as you describe.

Eventually bought an antenna extension with 5m cable to get better Wi-Fi connection and that did seem to help.

However, eventually moved over to Solar Assistant and that works very well now with only 1 or 2 connection drops a month.

Hi Kurt,

Ok, so the first step was to get an extension cable for the data logger antenna. I bought 5m of single cable HDF-195 SMA (m)-SMA(f) from Poynting Antennas which I connected to the data logger on the inverter and then connected the small antenna supplied with the logger to that. I then tried various positions to get better Wi-Fi signal. That didn't really work.

The second step was then to buy a better antenna and so I bought the following antenna from Poynting again and connected that to the 5m extension cable. That did give better connectivity and connection dropping did become a bit better: https://poynting.tech/antennas/omni-85-2/

After all of that I was getting frustrated with lost signal and the 10 minute delay in data access on the inverter via SolarMan and decided to chuck all of that in and buy the full kit of the Pi from Solar Assistant and I have never looked back: https://solar-assistant.io/

Connectivity has been excellent from the Pi and the 2sec data delay has allowed me to optimise my system immediately as needed.

Was there a way to get historic data into solar-assistant?

Kurt, the logger uses 2.4Mhz network which is very susceptible to interference. Maybe try to change the channel on your Router to something less digested. There are some apps you can use to scan your network and suggest a better channel. I use the home connect app for iphone.

I did this at first and later changed it, Make sure your phone is connected to the closest wifi point than access the wifi data loger via on your phones wifi option.

Then enter 10.10.10.1 in url and setup from there. I have not had any issues so far.

Do you have the latest sunsynk data logger as there is a new one that just came out recently?

Yes I have the latest Sunsynk logger. (I think there is a wifi/lan version as well).  If your issues persist consider swopping the wifi only version to the one with a LAN cable port.  You should have rock solid signal then.

Thanks Gents,

I do believe I have the latest data logger, it has an ethernet port at the bottom of the dongle.

I removed the dongle, and moved it about 50 cm from below the Inverter connection point, since then connection seems stable?

Perhaps wifi signal being interfered by by AC cabling into and out of inverter?

Thanks for tips and suggestions.

Regards!

Hi All.

Hope you’re well.

My sunsynk data logger appears to be offline (the app hasn’t been receiving data for over 17 hours)

Went to check the data logger itself and it is now only showing the red light and not the red and green light.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thank you

I am having the same issues, both lights on. When I connect to the logger and go to the IP address it says connection is ok.

I only displays data when in Load shedding by means of showing battery discharge and the load.

I don't get any data when the power is back.

I have asked my technical support guy at my supplier and hoping for more Info.

I even re created the plant and still no luck.

I experienced this in the past when I upgraded the app. I fixed it by going to the app settings(in android), clearing all data. Open App, login again, and it was working after that

This is caused by interference on the wifi bands.

Try move to a less congested channel. Also on your wifi router enable cts/rts on the wifi interfaced. This functionality is designed to help mitigate wifi interference. Google wifi hidden node problem

Hello :)

ok I managed to get it sorted yesterday... The CT was not connected properly....

I didn't consider it as it worked for the first 2 days.

so if anyone reads this in the future... Make sure the CT coil is connected haha

Hello there,

my datalogger is offline once every week sometimes once every two weeks for a couple of hours. Today it's been offline since about 11h30, it's now 17h35 and it's still offline. What would appear to be the issue please?

My logger also disconnected yesterday, and still offline. Any idea what the issue could be? Wifi is close, and goind on and off since day one....

Mine is also down today from 07:00 this morning and still down its 19:45 now

My master units logger also went down Monday morning 07h18. Tried everything to get it back online. Remained dead except for steady green light. Logger on the Slave stayed connected

Sunsynk suggested swapping loggers. Did so. Now I have two dead loggers. The Master seems to be killing the loggers.

Sunsynk have no answer. Unaware of any problem. I suspect this may be more widespread.

Perhaps recent firmware update corrupted the loggers via the Master?

Anybody else with similar issues or resolutions?

I hardly have any issues with my Synsynk logger, and the same when it was a Solarman logger. There was one outage that I recall, but it was at the Sunsynk server side. Then again, some years ago I invested in (now dated) Ubiquiti Unifi AP-AC-LR access points in my home, because I reasoned that life is far too short to have bad wifi.

My Unifi APs have served me well, and I configure and use a dedicated 2.4Ghz SSID, channel and IP network for all my IOT stuff (CBi Astutes, Inverter, weather station etc.) It is further configured to separate IOT devices from one another, and also to go out to the Internet firewall only. That way if a device gets hacked, malicious firmware update or an IOT server compromised, there can be no lateral movement through my network.

A technique to troubleshoot an offline Sunsynk logger is to configure a hotspot on your cellphone, and see if the logger can connect to it. At least that way you can eliminate whether the logger is the problem or not.

Good evening, Yellow_TapeMeasure, I too have an Ubiquiti Unifi AP-AC-LR network in my home (multiple access points and dedicated 2.4GHz and 5GHz outputs).  The network was installed long before the Sunsynk system and is extremely stable with a fibre connection to the www.

The Unifi network also happily runs IDS HYYP for my alarm system (2.4Ghz), multiple CBI Astute devices without any issues, also Google home, my Yamaha hifi, multiple Xiaomi TV devices and Samsung TVs.  The Sunsynk system was installed in September 2022 and ran smoothly on the Unifi 2.4 GHz wifi network until this past Monday.   No devices have ever had connection issues.  Even Sunsynk, until Monday 16 Jan.

The only thing that has changed in the entire solar system is the firmware update from Sunsynk.  The logger for the Master inverter failed to connect, while the logger for the Slave sustained its connection.  On swapping the two loggers (on the advice of Sunsynk) the functional logger from the Slave inverter survived 28 minutes on the Master inverter and then exhibited the same failure mode.  Now both loggers are dead.

Of course, I also tried the trick of trying to connect via a mobile phone hotspot, with the home unifi network switched off.  The logger was able to be set to the android 2.4GHz hotspot but still failed to connect to the internet.  Status 'not connected' and Cloud 'initializing'   The second failed logger now has the same failure and is also not able to connect.  The logger(s) just show a constant green light.

Sunsynk's advice at this time is for me to courier the two failed loggers to them to investigate the failure. The contact person at Sunsynk JNB is [email protected]

Simply replacing non-functional loggers is not going to solve this problem.  Another two loggers will simply die.  My installer is going to give me a 3rd logger and I fully suspect that it will die as well.  Sunsynk will receive a courier package with 3 dead loggers next week.

I have already advised Dino @ Sunsynk of at least three other people concurrently experiencing the same problem.  I reiterate that this problem will multiply as I fully suspect a firmware update being implicated.

Zero feedback has been received from Sunsynk (UK).
