Hi,

I saw on a few forums a lot of issues with the sunsynk inverters giving off an annoying high pitched frequency. We recently installed the 8kw one… the noise is  absolutely terrible. It’s coming out our inverter and also from appliances…my wife and I struggling to sleep it’s so loud (older people may not be able to hear it).  I see they have an NRS certification but this makes no sense… After further investigation some bogus Chinese company gave them this certification in Hong Kong… impossible they passed the rigid testing. 

1. does anyone have a solution to this? sunsynk South Africa is not taking returns due to this issue. 

2. are there any recommendations of high quality inverters that won’t give me this issue?

3. where is the best place to sell this inverter on the second hand market? Installed last week. And what price could I expect?

I am considering buying the Synsynk, not good to hear this.  I wonder if the Deye does the same.  Maybe then I have to consider another brand.

The 8k has some fans and should be installed away from living areas - like in your garage.

The NRS certification is done independently. Sunsynk is sold in UK, EU, US, OZ and many other places that have stricter rules - under the brands Sunsynk, Deye & Sol-Ark

Most people very happy with the SunSynk/Deye inverters.

When is the high pitched sound? It it all the time or during load shedding or when charging or when PV is at maximum load is it when discharging or etc...

1.Never heard of the high pitched issue before.

2.Try Victron - they make some excellent inverters.

Yea this is a real issue i have been living with for more than a year .My pc's psu screams all day long. I have to switch off my power plug to pc every night as it makes so much noise i cant sleep otherwise. I thought it may just be an issue with the 5kw units but now it seems like all of them do it . Its pretty frustrating.

Under normal usage the SunSynk inverter does a pass thru of the grid. The Volts & Hz track Eskom's.

Is the firmware updated?

Is the Earth correctly connect?

yes and yes . This is a hardware issue as far as i can understand it . firmware wont help . There are quite a few threads about this issue even on the Sunsynk forum but they seem to just laugh it off and say wow you have really good hearing . You have to be well under 40 of age to be able to hear the 15 khz its transmitting through all the appliances apparently.

Did a Google and seems to be an issue with some SunSynk models that creates interfering harmonics on the power line.
Hopefully SunSynk can fix it for you. 😞

Would be interesting to see a spectrum analysis of the AC in and AC out.

Thanks @system32for the reply. unfortunately the issue is constant and is coming out of the appliances, not just the inverter. I called the sunsynk repair Centre and they said that they are aware of the issue and there are a lot of complaints. However they still do no have a solution and they refuse to take back the units due to this issue under the narrative of “don’t worry we are working on it”. It could unfortunately take months even years… thanks for your recommendation Re: Victron.

What % of units sold have this issue? Do all units generate this noise, and only some people hear it. Or is it only a problem with some of the units being sold?

From what i can understand they all do it . I hear it in all of the Sunsynk youtube videos so that tells me its probably all of them but i do not know for sure.

My Deye does it too. Have only heard it at the inverter itself though, not coming from any appliances. 

If on the inverter only, its OK. But I see some people hear it through their LED tvs, hifi equipment, speakers, etc. That is a total dealbreaker for me.  

So how common is the issue of noise from the house appliances? 

After months of research I was set on getting a Sunsynk inverter this week, but cant take this chance. 

Would it not be possible to identify makes of appliances that are affected as well as type of appliance?

I have tried multiple PSU's for my PC and they both do it. Have not heard it from any other appliances other than PC's in the house  . I have a 12v charger that squeels like crazy when charging up a car battery.

I have a sunsynk5k and have never experienced any issue from any of my appliances throughout my house.
No diffs whether on gird or off grid, no diffs loadshedding or not, nothing, nada, maybe I am just lucky.
I have several tower pcs and 2 laptops 2 routers and a whole bunch of wifi sensors all over the place and never once heard anything.

Maybe I am getting too old to hear this
But even standing right next to the inverter all i hear is a feint buzzz, very very feint, i have to focus real hard to hear it.
My RP4 cooling fan though makes quite a noise but it is far away, in the garage, from where i live 🤣

Yes, it should be

The "noise" will be the same high frequency noise that came from old CRT TV's, as the flyback transformer was working. In the "old" days this was normal, and we still watched TV. 😂

 

Oh no... Another thread on this issue, I was hoping the 8KW doesn't do this as I tested my PC screen at someone elses house with an 8KW and it was quiet.

I have had to do the same as Nexuss regarding my PC by installing a smart switch on its power cord so I can turn it on and off via Home Assistant. Only turn it on when I have my headset on otherwise the buzzing drives me mad. 

Many people can't hear it but unfortunately I can and I am one of those people where even a small rattle in a car will annoy me so this really bothers me and I get a headache working at my PC without the headset on because of this buzz. Even the DB board and the Neon globe lights in my garage make the noise.  

 

It is so bad. in my opinion these inverters need to be sold with a warning to people with good hearing to test it out first at someone elses installation to check if they will hear it or not. 

 

I have a bigger problem in that I bought the Sunsynk battery with the inverter for the 10 year warranty and the other inverter brands don't seem to support the Sunsynk battery CAN communications so if I want to change my inverter to a different brand I won't have battery communications...

One question, are you using the eskom earth in your install or do you have a seperate earth rod, the 8kw install where I tested and did not hear the noise seemed to be seperated from eskom earth and had a full time neutral earth bridge wired in and had a earth rod connected to the earth wiring. Maybe this is the difference?

 

On my install I use the eskom earth and a earth neutral bond relay for when the grid power goes out. 

I am keen on a Sunsynk 5kw, but am worried about the high pitched noise experienced by some. Is this still an issue or has it been fixed by way of updates in the meantime?

Still an issue on mine, I had them update my firmware two weeks ago, no change. Best would be to try visit someone with a Sunsynk installation and see if you can or cannot hear the noise. 

Hi everyone

I have found a solution to the problem. Before you get too excited, I need to say that it isn't an easy nor cheap fix. It also only gets rid of the 15kHz whine on your appliances (output side of the inverter), while the noise from the inverter itself remains unchanged. That being said, it was still worth it for me. Our microwave was driving me insane!

Anyway without further ado, to fix the issue you need to place a big filter inductor on the live line between your inverter and your appliances. The inductor must have a ferrite core (preferably the MnZn type as they have a higher core saturation point). Iron cores wont work as they will filter out the 50Hz power as well and probably cook itself within minutes. I got my E-cores from Mantech Electronics (about R350 for two half cores), although they seldom have stock of these large cores. With these cores you will need between 50-100 turns (resulting in 1-5mH) and the wire size is determined by the amount of current your load is going to draw. I used 10m of 3.14mm^2 enamel wire (sourced from Communica @ R210) which got me about 50 turns and 1.25mH. At 1.25mH it should attenuate about 14dB of the 15kHz noise. After I installed it, I couldn't hear the whine at all. So it definitely works.

Also, another note to those who haven't wound an inductor/transformer yet, it took me a whole day to wind that thing. A solid core wire with a 2mm diameter is quite difficult to work with...

Did you Install this on your main live inverter output line or only in front of specific appliances?
