August 3, 20196 yr And a other thing is, that's maybe a good thing, this will make a bit of competition in the local SA market that the other guys can drop on there price.
August 6, 20196 yr Author Shipping to Cape Town is R1500 odd. So my total cost is about 35,000 all in for the batteries. Fairly decent for 9KW usable. I only need around 2kw overnight, so plenty of headway for me. Now all I need to do is be in Cape Town at some point this year so I can replace the old batteries with these

August 6, 20196 yr Author The shipping quote - R1479.13 is from my own shippers - Gemini, not from Revo, but its pretty much the same ballpark as they guesstimated (around R1500). Total weight is 125KG; 2 x boxes of 60kg each (approx. 55cm x 60cm x 21cm) 1 x box of 4kg (approx. 53cm x 38cm x 16cm) 1 x bag of cables (1kg) (we strap this onto the BMS so there should be no need to declare this item).

Sure, give me a quote. From either Kempton Park, at Crusader Logistics in Glenmarias, or Ferndale, Randburg to Plumstead, CPT.
August 8, 20196 yr Author I will likely use them on another install, even though they're dead acid. My cost per KW for the batteries works out at - R35000 / 10KW / 3650 days (should be more, but thats what they're allegedly good for) =R0.9589 / KW Slightly less than half the price of the sporadically available CoCT electricity for battery alone. Rough total cost for this install was - 4 x 300w panels = R8,000 MPPT = R10,000 (FM80) Inverter = R15,000 (3KW Victron) 10KW Batteries = 35,000 ==== R68,000 Or R1.86 / KW ( 68000 / 10KW / 3650 as an incorrect* rough calc. ) *generation is obviously more than the batteries 10KW daily, as I will use in the daytime, but as a simple back of a napkin calc it suffices. Aren't I happy I'm completely offgrid, and don't have a CoCT connection on the property, so no extra costs Especially since its literally cheaper to be offgrid, than buy their expensive electricity...

August 8, 20196 yr Author I use the hmm, maybe I should turn something off, or worst case, go without electricity. Although I don't really have that issue. Hot water is off of SHW Oven is LPG Nothing else in the house really chows electricity. I have far more PV power than is needed for whats in use, similar to battery. I sized for Winter usage..

I cant see how you would cope if you needed anything outside of normal load or didnt have sun for a few days.

Well, its 4 years in, so have had a few (without issue) Full details are here - https://goingsolar.co.za/2015/08/23/off-grid/ I usually find that if there hasn't been sun for a few days there are probably more important things to worry about, eg fimbulwinter, or possibly nuclear winter.. August 8, 20196 yr Can you post some photos of the batteries and the BMS and all the connections on it please?
August 8, 20196 yr Author I'm not back in SA for another few months still, and its going to get delivered to my cousins, and sit for a while, so probably not for a month or three. Earning the $ so I can spend on sillyness like the batteries 😋

September 2, 20205 yr Author Updating this post, seeing as I'm using the batteries now in earnest. I just splurged for the Canbus over RS485<-> to a Ve.direct usb adaptor to connect up to my "Victron" VenusPi, which means that finally my Victron can talk to the batteries and know an accurate SoC (State of Charge). The adaptor came from Revov. Works, but it's a bit of a crappy design. Looking at it, I could probably have just knocked something up with an ESP32 and pumped data over wifi to the VenusPI. Not like I don't have the time at the moment during lockdown! Revov have told me that they're replacing their BMS in the next few months with something snazzier in future, which will be more compatible with stuff. So YMMV.. I'll be replacing my FM80 next week with more Blue (scrounged a MPPT 150/70), just so I can see the solar pv generation, which will mean ordering another Ve.Direct cable, its been a whole week since I ordered my previous one from Jaco. Overall I'm happy with the batteries - they work, without issues. I think I'll be adding another 10KW of storage soon, as I'm increasing the footprint of what gets used, and I'd like about a week of battery storage if there is no sun. Will also add some more panels on the roof soon, as the AC load is now slightly over what gets generated in winter days. Given I've been slowly upgrading, I think I've done fairly well My battery has done a whole 38 cycles since I've had it running. I have a copy of the BMS software from the vendor which can directly query the BMS (although I do need to get an RS485 -> USB cable). Shenzhen Tian Bang Da Polytron. TBD_POWER BMS. PM if you need a copy. Battery SoC earlier - Edited September 2, 20205 yr by shanghailoz
