Decided over December that working from home and load shedding does not mix well. Also see the maintenance at Koeberg plant having a major impact on the grid this year. Discussed with my installer and got the following: Deye 5kw Inverter 1 x Shoto 5.12 kw Li-ion battery 6 x JA 540w Panels The installation was completed with future expansion planned for end of this year. Additional 6 panels and one more Shoto Battery. Also looking at replacing our stove with gas in the next couple of months. Oven for now will have to stay, it's a duel Defy thermo fan oven. Decided to join this forum as I would like to expand my knowledge about alternatives and get some i…

  3. Is R73 000 a reasonable quote for: Sunsynk battery 5,12KWH 51,2V Sunsynk hybrid inverter 5KW Installation & transportation Electrical accessories

  4. Hi All, I'm sure this has come up multiple times so if people are getting tired of answering this one, please point me to the best thread. I'm currently running a sunsynk hybrid inverter with battery and solar pannels. I've noticed a slight flickering in the lights (it lasts fractions of a second) when the grid power goes on or off. I think this flicker only happens when we have some dependency on grid power. ie: when when we are running entirely off of solar during the day, the system doesn't "care" that the grid is back on. But when running in the evening off battery and the grid comes back on and the inverter makes the decision to switch back to grid power, t…

Good day We are using a max of 14kWh per day. We are on prepaid. I worked on exact daily usage and monthly average usage. Our usage is normally 12 units but had a few days of 14kWh. All big appliances are on timers spread from 8:00 till 17:00. Will this system cover at least 85% of our Eskom usage? 1 X Growatt SPF5000ES hybrid inverter 1 X Hubble 5.5kWh lithium battery 8 X 550W Canadian solar panels

  6. Hi. I have a dual Sunsynk 5.5KW system and I'm fedup with adding batteries. I want to use all of my battery capacity for solar storage. So for those long dark winter days the 8kw/10kVA Dual fuel generators are starting to look very attractive. https://leroymerlin.co.za/dual-fuel-generator-8kw-10kva-petrol-or-lp-gas-81477626?sfdr_ptcid=32806_617_692178575&sfdr_hash=98d60cdd38244fdbda90f8920554a846 Is there anything I need to be aware of before installing one of these generator with my system? Other than cray high cost of fuel that is. Kind regards Hannes

  7. So we are on a farm and have a system, with three rental units including our own house. Eskom line connection fee is more than the kwh related amount we consume. We want to go completely offgrid… because neighbours paid eskom r15k to go prepaid 3 years ago and they are still not converted… Would it be feasible to install a system at each unit, and use the existing wiring to connect all the units into a private grid, so one could share excess power by prioritising load, battery then feedback to grid? And also use grid to charge batteries. Then if say someday we need more we can add panels or a new system anywhere on the grid…. Also it would then be feasible to utilise…

Hi All. Apologies if it has been mentioned but couldn't really find anything. Had an inverter (Fivestar WO8548 WiFi 6500W *8KVA* 48V) and 4 x 12MVR Monbat 180A since Sept. 2022 and used utility as charging. Not one day any issues with the inverter. (Batteries and inverter are the best cost for us at this stage) 11 March 2023 upgraded to: 10 x 350 Mon Solar Panels 12 x 12V Narada 180A I want to keep it straight as possible. 1) Please could someone help with the correct settings for the inverter after panels have been installed. I'm really battling to get my head around the when something/what is used or wording like vol…

  10. Good day power forum guru's I am in the process of trying to build a solution for our school's network mainly brought about by needing to keep the security camera system online during loadshedding. We have 2 main network consolidations where the NVR, Server and core switches are located that will require backup power for 200 and 400 watts respectively. Then we have 2 network cabinets in storerooms with 2 switches each that we need to power, both rated at 30W so it would be 60W per cabinet. Then we have 2 8-port POE switches that are in 2 separate classrooms that provide power to some POE Security Camera's that will also need to be powered. I am looking for …

Hi guys, I need some advise and I am just going to apologize if this is a 💩question 🙂. I have 2 x Growatt SPF5000ES inverters hooked up to 2x LBSA Lifepo4 batteries. From time to time in my area we go down for days on end and on cloudy days, my panels just cannot get my batteries charged fast enough in order to run my things in my home. Question here then is: Could I use my generator to top up my batteries by hooking up an adequate Lifepo battery charger to the generator and connecting the charger directly to the master battery pack? Or would you recommend an additional change over switch at the AC in to the inverters and connecting the generator to the gen input thus fee…

Hi Im busy helping a retired couple decide on a backup system that they need. Since they are retired , they have a limited budget. Usage a day is 9 units, which includes the geyser and stove. but they dont want that on solar. So I can work on 4-5 units as average usage. What they want to run of the system is 2 brand new fridge freezers and sometimes the tv, air cooler, alarm plug, gate motor plug and lights. They are already using minimal stuff and do not waste electricity. I personally would recommend a 5kw system, but they cant afford it. And a battery back up system without solar wont work, as the power sometimes goes off for ext…

  14. Hi guys, Trying to find the solution to what seems to be a smallish challenge. I am wanting a solution to keep all Office lights on during Load-shedding. I have capacity on our Genset. So the "gap" between shedding and genset run, is what we need the answer to? Its 3 floors of lighting, all wired on different phases. Loads vary between 2000 watts and 4500 watts on each floor, 8 to 18 amps. So, Do we go a single phase Inverter on each floor, with it's own Batt Backup? Do we go with a monster 3 phase Inverter and monster Batt Backup installed on 1 floor? Reaching out to the Industry experts here for your expert opinions please? tks.

  15. Me again...I took delivery of my Kodak OG3.24 and two Halo 100Ah last week after absorbing as much as I could on the 3kW budget solution threads on this forum. Got really good service from the team at the PowerForum Store. 🥰 I will be connecting the 2 Halos in series and to that end I got some 25mm2 battery cable & M8 lugs today. My first question: Would it be acceptable to power the inverter with 1mm2 cabtyre (AC in) for now and the same for AC out as a temporary measure, using the setup like the RCT1000 inverter trolley I damaged?(I will use the 25mm2 cables to connect the batts from the get go). Then, once I get the electrician to site: My ti…

Hi all, Question: Can I connect a solar panel to a gate motor without removing the original charging system? In other words, keep the AC to the motor that runs the gate charging circuit and when the AC falls away the solar panel takes over. Thanks in advance. Billy

  17. Hi all, I've been lurking here a while and absorbing all the information possible, of which there is tons. I currently have a very small backup system that I'd like to expand in a modular sense and keeping costs in mind. I am presently running a 720w Mecer 12V inverter that powers a basic lights circuit and keeps my internet going during power outages and load shedding. I currently run 2x 12v260Ah batteries in parallel which gives me decent runtime, provided I keep the essentials on. I would like to upgrade to something a bit bigger so that I can add another circuit or two, but I would like to try and keep it modular so that I can expand upon it when t…

If anyone is interested: https://www.voltex.co.za/product/sunsynk-hybrid-inverter-5kw-48v-wifi-dongle-plus-greenrich-lithium-battery-4-95kwh-49-6ah/ I placed my order earlier this afternoon and just got a confirmation call that my order is ready. Not the easiest of websites to order from and not all franchises seem to have stock. Apologies if this sort of positing is frowned upon (I have no commercial interests - promise).

  19. Hi I live in a complex on the ground floor and it is not possible for me to put solar panels. I am looking to put an inverter and battery solution. I see that Sunsynk seems to be the way to go, but also a little expensive. Due to the fact that I cannot use solar, do I need a "fancy" inverter, or would something like a budget fivestar inverter work. I have tried to read as much as I can, and understand that I need to ensure the batteries charge and discharge properly, but don't want to overspend if I am not going to even be using an inverter to its full potential. Thank you in advance for your guidance.

  20. After some serious homework being done, understanding DoD's, SOC's etc. I came to a point where on a load of 500-900W of power usage, a Hubble AM2 would be a good spot to start, paired up with a Sunsynk 5KW inverter. With everything installed yesterday, I'm super happy with the transfer rate from Eskom to Battery. Nearly no sign of lights flickering or dimming! FYI, no solar yet, that's part of the future expansion and reason i got this inverter. However, all that said, I'm not sure if my settings are correct? The battery's DIP switch has been set to 1 on, 2,3,4 off. I've setup the Wifi dongle that came with as well, seems it's the Synsynk dongle. Qu…

  21. Hi everyone, New user here, hoping to pick the brains of those more knowledgeable than myself Poked around a bit but haven't stumbled across any discussion on quite like what I want to do. I'm looking to build myself a UPS system, but I currently live in a flat in an apartment block, so any kind of DB integration is out of the question. However, I'd like to buy components now such that I can meet my immediate needs in the flat, and then just move these components into a house and properly integrate into the DB when the time comes. At this point, I'm thinking of a system 5kW inverter & 5kWh battery, installed in a portable server rack - …

  22. I intend to buy Kool Energy 1.5kw with lithium battery. To be used during load shedding only for now. TV, 2x desktop computers, 2x monitors, DVR with 3 cameras, decoder, 5.1 blu ray home theatre system. Will this inverter be ok for 2-4 hours during Eskom's loadshedding.

  23. Started by Martin G,

I was advised to add a Battery Management System to my home inverter/battery package because my SLA 105VAbattery only lasts about 3 months due to the my battery exceeding the cycle life of the battery. Is this true and if so where can I purchase a BMS?

  24. This might be a dumb question, but I'm struggling to find any info. If I get something like this: https://www.geewiz.co.za/load-shedding-solutions/190129-axpert-type-pure-sine-1000va-inverter-trolley-1x-100ah-lithium-battery-6-hour-battery-life-kit-1000w-50a-pwm-solar-with-lithium-battery-3000-cycles.html Is this good enough to run a PC on directly without the PC switching off? I heard that inverters have a longer transfer time/switch over than a UPS. This particular one seems to be 10-20ms. Is it normal to supplement an inverter with a UPS to not have the PC switch off during the switch over to battery?

  25. Started by JohanG,

How do you provide for a frail care home that uses 133 kilowatt hours a day during the week . Most of the consumption happens during the day with very little at night. It consists of the washing of clothes and drying and ironing as well as heating of water for washing and bathing during working hours. iIt seems that in essence it means that we need a lot of solar panels and not so many batteries. Has anybody been involved in setting up a similar sort of installation. Suggestions will be welcomed.
