Hi Guys, Some advice please. First time here and my apologies if this was already discussed.

I am running a 5KW Axpert King OG equivalent in Eco Mode. ( pass through )

When my AC Grid power drops the changeover time to inverter mode is too long and the off and then on again is messing with my fridges. ( also 220v on Eco to 230v on Ups )

I have installed a Ellies Fridge Safe voltage protector on 1 fridge but it does not seem to help. 

Is there perhaps anything else I can try on the input power side to absorb / overcome this delay. Also when ac grid power returns there is no problem and the changeover is very quick .

there is an operating mode where you can set it to UPS which has a shorter cutover time

Thanks, I am using this setting. UPS. Changeover is like a definite off then on again. Has anybody had any success with a Capacitor bank or similar ??

The inverter works perfect when on Auto mode ..... But because it is installed indoors the fans ramp up so loud it is quite unpleasant.

Do you have the OG5.48 or the Plus version? 

We did flash the latest Firmware update.

Should I be looking to replace this with a Newer model ?? It's only 3 months old

They are noisy, I have the same (Kodak) inverter, also mounted inside. You get used to it, but I'm making plans to move it out of the way due to the noise. Maybe one of the reasons they are such good value for money second hand? 

Has anyone tried a small offline ups between the main inverter / ups and a fridge to absorb the change over time ?? I'm trying to stop my fridge from shutting down when AC power drops and ups kicks in.

You have to live with the noise of you want it to work as intended

I have installed a Cheap online UPS between my main UPS ( in eco mode ) and my 2 fridges and my chest freezer. When load sheading  on / off my fridges dont skip a beat. Constant 220 volt regardless of incoming voltage.

So i have also solved my Fan noise issue at the same time.

This does not make a lot of sense to me to power an ups from inverter to get a decent change over time. Most inverters do actually have ups's function most Voltronic units have the option to choose between (Apl) appliances 20ms or ups(10ms) unless this inverter that you have is faulty Even if it is over 20ms your fridge should not skip a beat. Maybe @Coulombor @BritishRacingGreencan shed some light on this. Don't know if this machine you are using is a Voltronic clone.

Normally a cheap UPS as indicated will not be a pure sine and risky to run fridges from it. 

As per @TaliaB not sure why it is used apart from the fan noise plus point. 

 

( also 220v on Eco to 230v on Ups )

You can change the voltage to 220 V if you want; I run mine on 240 V to better match my grid voltage. My post on doing this is sadly in need of updating.

 

Don't know if this machine you are using is a Voltronic clone.

From the sticker, it appears to be a genuine Voltronic, rebranded as they all are.

I have posted about this before. What happens is that some compressors do not have enough flywheel to overcome a short interruption and stall. They cannot restart against the remaining pressure in the cooling system. The motor stalls and draws a high current. Normally the built in protection trips. After some time it will reset as the pressure has gone and the compressor will restart. My fridge sometimes stalls, sometimes it overcomes.

I inquired at Agri for a so called fridge protection device. It turned out to be nothing but a voltage surge protector. That doesn't make sense and does not help the problem. The right device would be a relay with pull in delay of a few minutes. At switch over it would drop and give the fridge time to release pressure in the system before restart.

The idea with a small secondary UPS is not bad if it switches fast enough. No, I think there is no risk to the fridge as it supplies only for a very short time from its inverter.

Please show us the UPS. Generally cheap and online don't go together?

At home my fridge and chest freezer seem to be fine without any issues, at work sometimes with the change over from generator back to Eskom grid causes the compressor in the water coolers to make a weird noise - perhaps like a clanking noise. If you wait long enough it sorts itself out, otherwise you turn the power off and then on and it's fine again.

 

So what happens with the fridge? How does one notice whether the compressor stalls or not?

When it runs you hear a hum from the compressor, when it stalls it's quit. However if changeover happens when the compressor is thermostat controlled at rest noting will happen and you won't hear a difference.

If you look at any refrigeration system the pressure is controlled via the thermostat and pressure switches on both high and low sides. The ptc will protect the compressor motor should the cycle be interrupted. The point is with 20ms changeover from Eskom to inverter their should be continuity without interuption. Unless faulty compression system or faulty inverter.

This ups is always Online so "0" change over time. This ups is not affected by the main unit change over at the DB . This has been running perfectly for 2 weeks. My fridges are permanently powered and dont even skip a beat.

Works for me 100 %
