Growatt Inverter + Pylontech Batteries : BMS Comms Guide

Hi Strauss,

I run two SPF5000TL with 24 PV and 2 x 9.6KW Pylontech stacks.  I use the firmware originally provided by Siliconkid.  It works fine accept the charging form PV doesn't seem to work very well and charge current is limited to 25A (too low for 20KW batteries), the use2 setup works fine for me.   Can you perhaps post your typical charging graph logs, I would like to compare with the BMS controlled results you have.

Image: This is what my charge curve looks like, charges up to 53V until sunset:

Second image: my daily chart on one of the inverters.

My spf5000 charge to 95% then keeps it there till sunset

NOTE TO ALL We have now established that BOTH of the firmware updates that were provided to me by Growatt in China ARE required to get the BMS comms working correctly between the Growatt SPF5000

  • I think some of it has to do with the canbus communications with the battery. In later discussions, it seems these Growatt inverters work fine with the same  battery, as long as you set the settings i

  • For what its worth. I have installed a few growatt inverters with Dyness Batteries. My settings on the ES is Li and protocol 1. Cable that I use is the black cable black boot on the in port on th

What i notice was that my inverter volt stay the same 50.8 and the charge amps varies from 10-50 amps on shine phone when load increase

Thank you for the feedback,  I have adjusted the float voltage down to 52.2V now, just to be a bit on the safer side, however Pylontech specifies charging voltage up to 53.5V.  Unfortunately with the BMS running things I could not get my 8 x US2000 battery group to charge at 80A . it always limits around 25A, of course bat amps report higher with load requirement above this charging current level.  On USE02  I can get my battery stack fully charged by PV at 80A.  I am yet to see someone with PV panels and BMS reporting a proper high charging current on a large battery group.  Will just have to stay on USe02 mode for now.  Works quite well for now.

Hi Silicon Kid,

Thanks for the update. i have managed to upgrade to firmware 500.09/002.03. I DM'd the link to you. I ran both the firmware installs. the BMS management is now working. i rebooted as guided with each firmware.  What I noticed was that the ISP goes to the last firmware. bin file when running you need to change the directory to the correct one. I have however lost the WiFI data logger function. Any recommendations on how to get it working again?

I managed to get the data logger working again. The problem was with the communication board of the inverter and how it was sending information to the data logger spent a few day communicating with Growatt and I received a firmware update to correct. Touch wood all is looking stable now.  I will monitor and give an update after a few days.

In that case, I'm going to need that firmware update please, if it actually solves that problem.

That's been driving me up the wall too.

I had actually given up on it.

Hi I have a similar problem my 2nd SL Inverter is not communicating with the datalogger. I've a forever flashing red light on the 2nd datalogger and no communication with the inverter. Can you perhaps email me the firmware that made your system to work well and perhaps details of how you managed to make it work with Growatt guys. My email address is [email protected]. Thanks Rakwena

Hello iss keep as updated i would like to see the difference in the firmwear on bms my firmwear still factory

Unless the latest factory firmware on brand new units has finally been updated, of course. Then you might be ok with factory, but from what I've seen that's not the case.

Today has been one of the better days in Jozi. Looks pretty good so far. I’ve also notice that Amps fluctuate to 32.6Amps. It is controlled through BMS. You can’t change the charge percentage. For me it works. One last thing I did do was change my battery wiring to a parallel.

''One last thing I did do was change my battery wiring to a parallel'' Did you have your Pylontech US3000 connected in series? Assuming you had two, that is 96v on a 48v inverter. I'm surprised that you didn't blow something on the inverter 😀

Yes I have the two US3000. That’s why you always invest in a multimeter. Than test before connecting to the inverter.

I Check with a few websites before deciding to give it a shot. This was one reference I used.

Nice, can you confirm which firmware it is that you are running now? which version was supplied to fix it?

I am currently run 500.09/002.03. I had to run 3 updates to get it working. One for the inverter, than BMS & last for the communication board on the inverter.

On Win10 you need to install the com port driver (CP210xxx) 1st before Windows can see the com port. remember that hardware changes to OS always needs a reboot. reboot with the USB cable connected.
