Starting In Solar? Feel free to introduce yourself

Starting in Solar? New Comers Feel Free to Ask- There is no such thing as a silly question.

  1. I want to install 150 kw solar pv system on my farm. so any answer is valuable?

  2. Started by SPDreyer,

Good day My first post here I have had 12v systems for 8 years now, running a few appliances and computers fairly successfully However, the time has come to build something for my co3 laser cutter, i have been to a few local companies, but not a single one has really listened to my need and all quoted on a generic household setup with lots of battery and very little panels I would like to use mostly pv as we usually work office hours and the weather is fairly good. On the bad weather days eskom will have to do, if available My loads are: Laser 770w Chiller 450w Extractor fan 750w currently, but will buy a new one at 150w odd …

  3. Apologies if this is a stupid question - I've been going through posts looking for an answer and I am still unsure. I am building a house and am hoping to get off the grid to as large an extent as possible. I am envisioning about 28 Canadian panels, two Freedomwon 30/24 batterries and two Sunsynk 8Kw inverters. Every installer who has given me a quote or whom I've spoken to seems very much against the Sunsynk. The last one tried to dazzle me with big words and went on about the MOSFETs in the one versus whatever the other one has. Am i being pushed for money or is there a real difference which makes the Vectron worth it? Thank you …

  4. Hello all! I work remotely and run my house on solar energy for 8-9 hours a day. There are many blackouts, brownouts and power surges where I live. This helps me not loose a beat working. When using solar energy, I have my main circuit breaker switch off, as well. However, I keep being billed around the same consumption usage from the grid tied electric company. This doesn’t seem logical seeing my main circuit breaker switch is turned off all day. Thoughts?

Hi Guys, I am new to the forum and finding this platform very insightful. I am looking to install a solar system, I use on average 350 to 400 units of electricity monthly. Ideally, I am looking to have a backup solution for loadshedding and it will be a bonus to have the panels charge up the battery. Need to power up the following appliances: 2x fridge/fridges combos, 2 Laptops, 1x55inch TV & Sound Bar, About 15x 5w LED Lights, 1x router and ONT 1x Fan. What size inverter should I be considering?

Hi there! I am in northern subs of Cape Town. I want to get into solar but not sure if I should buy and install myself, use a trusted installer or rent (possibly rent to own). Pipe Dream: I have been considering about solar for many years. My initial setup would have used off-grid + lead-acid. I am really glad that didn't commit to that yet I regret not moving forward before lithium prices went through the roof. The master procrastinator inside me is begging me to wait for Maxeon Solar Technologies (global branch of SunPower) to bring it's boron diffused panels to South Afirca (40 year warranty) and for Ambri's liquid-metal batteries or sodium-ion batteries (cur…

Good day everyone. I'm an electrician with some good knowledge of industrial UPS installations but alas, the sheer volume of different consumer products on the market has me stumpoed a little. What I'm looking to do is run a remote shop completely offgrid. Loads will be as follows. Daytime load : 3A Nightime would be around 1.5A. So give or take about 350W. My plan is to power these complete from solar and batteries. I'm considering a 48V Lithium system but cost is rahter prohibitive (as far as I understand these batteries can do 80% Dod safely) So far I settled on four 12V 200Ah (2s2p)(so 24V 400Ah) batteries. From my calculations I would dra…

Good day all, new member, skala. I have installed a 3kW system using a Fivestar 3kW 3024/24 inverter/charger with 4X100ah 12v gel batteries connected to make up a 24v pack. System running good but I have a few questions.

  9. Started by Againstthegrains,

I have 9x 330w Japan Solar panels on the NE facing roof and 8x 330W panels on a NW facing roof. Max open circuit voltage (STC) for each panel is 46V and max power 8.7A. My old/current inverter is an old mecer, that used 3x3Pv and 2x4PV strings in parallel on a combiner box. And as I found out the inverter has only 1 MPPT and because the strings are on different roof angles but all on the same combiner box, the system doesn't work very well (yes, there are bad installers out there.) I'm upgrading to a sunsynk 12k 3p and so I need to up the input voltage to the new inverter to make it compatible: My plan is to put the 9x NE panels in series and connect to one MP…

  10. Hi hi. I have 3 x synerji 5.6 connected in 3phase system. Setting 28 is on 3p3. If i edit 1 the others edit too. However. I am getting no output. Inverters are on but no load output. 3phase back up system on rural farm for pumps.

  11. Hey all! Im in start of installing a Deye Inverter (its like Sunsynk). Im from Ukraine, and we had bunch of problems this winter due to war so i will need to be backed up better. So my install will be following: Deye Sun-12K-SG04LP3 (3 phase 12kwt) Batteries 2x 8s3p Lithium NMC(VW electro car blocks) paired as 16S with Daly BMS (thus i will have them running on 60 volts (80% charge) with no danger of overcharge (i just dont want to tear off the car blocks and cut it to 14S, just let it be. Blocks are 6.85kwt x2 =14 kwt i will have like 10Kwt by not fully charging them which suits me on the price i will get it) And have such builds twice is 20Kwt of sto…

I just had a chat with a friend of mine who wants to add panels on a 2nd string to his Deye 8kW. After pointing out that 4xCanadian with STC Vmp=37.9V(650W) is cutting it to fine from a starting point of view. His other choice is 580W with Vmp=34.5V. He had a chat with his new installer in VDBP who indicated based on my calculation the installer comforted him as he has never heard of a starting Voltage that must be above a specific level. The bad part is if these 4 panels don't start he has no space for a 5th panel. A risky way to part with R16000. This follows when he measured the N to E voltage as 130V his installer who installed the system does not think it i…

Hi all, I've got my solar system installed for a week now. Specs are: 8x455w Canadian solar panels, 1x hubble lithium 6kw battery, 1x 5kw Deye inverter. System is working as expected, however the past 3 days my panels will start to generate power in the morning, supplementing the demand to my house, and charging the battery. It then suddenly stops, and drops to 10w, until the next morning. The time period when the panels produce power is sporadic. I tested by using my airfryer, the grid still supplies the demand from Eskom, and not the panels during the day, which previously the inverter pulled the power from the solar panels. No …

  15. Hi Guys, Im new to the Inverter game and in process of purchasing a Kool Energy VM II 5.5KW Inverter with NEnergy LifeP04 48V 100AH Lithium Battery. This will power ensential items excluding fridges, geyser, stove, pool pump ect. Does anyone have experience with the Kool Energy and NEngery Brands? Thanks Paul

Hi everyone. I am new to solar and finding new things every day. I have an off the grid system and we will be going away for around 5 weeks. My security lights are connected to the solar system and that will be the only thing that will be on during this time. Together, they use around 40w. I have a Fivestar 3kv inverter with 2 panels and 2x 120kv batteries. Can I just leave it running, or is there a setting where I can lower the charging rate so it trickle charge the batteries for that time? I can only find "solar charge current ratio" in the settings menu. Not sure if this is the correct one. Thanks.

Morning, I am new to the forum. I have done a successful small project with a Axpert 3KV Inverter and 4x 345 watt panels. Working fine. Project 2 is for the real thing. I have a Luxpower SNA5000 inverter and 10x Canadian 595 watt Panels. A I understand the input current from the panels at 17.15A will be to high for the single MPPT rated at 13A and that I need to parallel the 2 MPPT's on the inverter and feed the panels in on only one MPPT. Thus will have 10x panels in series at 41.1V x 10 = 411 Volts which is below the 480Vdc of the inverter. The amps will then be below 2x 13A = 26A due to the MPPT's in parallel. If this is correct, then will it be within the i…

Hi all! I am a complete electrical illiterate and is contemplating installing a SunSynk 8kW hybrid inverter installed with one Sunsynk 10.65kWh 51.2V Lithium battery 208 Ah and 10 x 550W JA Solar Mono Perc panels. The installer that is assisting me has worked out the technical details and my only input was to insist on Sunsynk inverter and batteries! I am trying my best to educate myself on solar systems but I soon realized it is a bit beyond my comprehension!! My main concern at the moment....if I want to expand battery potential in the future can a SunSynk 5.32kWh 51.2v battery just be added?

  19. Hi there, very new to solar. I'm probably missing something obvious but my question is how do you know what is the maximum availability of solar power at any given point in time. I did search, but couldn't find anything useful. Inverter: Sunsynk Hybrid App: Sunsynk Connect Die power flow diagram on the app shows solar power input roughly balanced to the load. I want to know how much extra is available e.g. if I want to power my non-essential geyser is there sufficient extra solar power available. Example: This afternoon, house load was 400W, powered by solar. 9kW solar panels, but very cloudy. I wanted to switch solar to non-essential geyse…

I have installed a Fivestar 48V 5kVa inverter to supply power to an oxygen generator for an emphysema patient. It works well on a Utility, battery solar programme. I however cannot get into programming mode. It shows only P0, P1, P2, P4 and P5 and nothing else. Please advise. Regards, Neels

  22. Hi Powerforumites Thanks for all the advice you hand out so graciously. I'm about to push the button on a purchase, with the following options: 1) 2 x Deye 5kw Hybrid inverters Incl Wifi + 2 x Hubble AM5 5.12Kwh batteries 2) 2 x Luxpower 5.5kw Hybrid Inverters + 2 x Felicity 8.7kwh batteries I know it's not really apples for apples, and that option 2 gives you more battery capacity, and is about R10k cheaper, but I'm looking for quality, reliability and post-sale support as my key criteria. Is anyone willing to share insight or advice?

  23. Need some advice from the more seasoned folk please... I recently had a solar system installed. I’m using 3 x Freedom Won etower batteries (5kWh each), with a Victron MPII 48/5000 inverter, and 8 x 550w panels. System runs off PV first, then batteries, then grid. I included some screenshots below showing the Solar generation, and 1 showing my typical consumption profile. Typically, I generate enough from solar to run all the loads in the morning till midday, but not enough to put much back into the batteries that are sitting at 40% from the night's usage. Which means when i start using from batteries again, they batteries are only at around 60-75…

  24. Afternoon all! We have just installed a new system, and seems that we got most of it right. Now busy learning, and tweaking and finding more stuff to spend money on! Any comments are welcome, my thoughts are to double batteries, add a heat pump, and some automation to optimise when we use the power. Setup 1 x 8.8kW Inverter - SunSynk 2 x 4.8 kWh batteries - Pylontech UP5000 14 x 600W Solar Panels - Canadian We're adding 2 x 4.8 kWh batteries - Pylontech UP5000 1 x 3.6kW Geyser Heat Pump - probably ITS 3 x WiFi smart switches (for pool pump, geyser, and underfloor heating) Observations Base load through the night ~ 500W Incre…

  25. We’re relatively new to this so please bear with me if my question is a bit naive! … Our system consists of Deye 8kw inverter – 7.2 kw Edison lithium battery and 10 x JA 540 w solar panels in 2 strings of 5 each. In these early days, we’re learning our system through making mistakes ie., during loadshedding, the geyser mistakenly came on and was presumably draining the battery real fast. Someone put the kettle on and POOF – the system tripped, so we were left with no power until the grid came back on and the inverter re-booted itself and we were back to normal. However, here’s my hypothetical question. Say we’re in the total permanent grid down scenar…
