Starting In Solar? Feel free to introduce yourself

Starting in Solar? New Comers Feel Free to Ask- There is no such thing as a silly question.

  1. Started by cecilh,

Morning, starting on this confusing journey! I am close to installing a 5kw Sunsynk with a 5kw Sunsynk battery, with about 3.7kw PV. I have asked the question below to various installers and get various answers. I want to split up my home items between: Essential: All lights and plugs inside the house Non-Essential: Swimming pool pump Oven Geyser So my question, which applies to when there is NO load-shedding.... Some installers lead me to believe that when your home items (essential and non-essential items) are switched on and use more than 5kw in total, then the inverter will trip? Others say no, that wouldn't happen, as the ex…

  2. Hi, having watched how well our office has been working for the last two years with a solar installation, we've bitten the bullet and started purchasing components for our home installation. Monthly consumption for a house of 3 is about 400kWh, resistive geyser, gas stove. Roof is well insulated. We've order the following: Sunsynk 8kW inverter Sunsunk 5.32kWh battery 12 x JA 460W panels All the bits and pieces should arrive by the middle of June. One question - I want to be able to heat the geyser while the sun shines (5.5kWp should charge the battery pretty quickly) - is it preferable to use the auxiliary output on the invert…

  3. Started by MotVisagie,

Hello guys. I recently got the following system installed: Deye 16kVa single phase inverter 18 JA Solar 545 panels 5 x Shoto sdc10 box5 batteries. My current Max Charge setting for the battery is 50A. It uses 2.65kW to charge the batteries from the panels and the rest goes to load. Can I raise the Max Charge amps to lets say 60 or 70? I am just worried that the batteries wont get to 100 coc by 18:00. The BMS says charge limit is 250A. Regards. Michael.

  4. Started by kathy,

I am getting myself completely overwhelmed by all these watts, kilowatts, etc. I need to get a portable power station for my shop. I need to just run some lights off it. So, I just want to make sure I am on the right track here. If my lights total 70W I must then multiply that by 4 (hours of loadshedding) which then gives me 280W. I therefore need to find a power station that will give me a minimum of 300w output. I hope I am right with the above. Don't want to buy something that won't work or run out of power after 1 hour.

  5. Hi All. I’m looking at a 5 kW inverter with a 5.1 kWh battery to carry my small home through loadshedding. The Luxpower inverters seem well priced and reputable. In layman’s terms, what is the difference between the off-gird and hybrid ones? The first is about half the price of the second one, so there must be some features that I would miss out on. Looking forward to hear from you!

  6. Good day Currently, I have a 3Kw system with Lead Acid batteries, I want to upgrade it to a 5KW with a lithium battery no solar as it is not allowed at my complex probably will put it in future if things change. I did some research and seems the more I research the more confused I get. So I need some valuable help on the system to choose considering durability and cost. Option 1 low cost Lux Power Inverter 5KW Off Grid (LUX-SNA5000WPV) R13800.00 or KODAK Solar Off-Grid Inverter King with UPS 5kW 48V R12600.00 Revov 2LIFE-R9-UBMS-R100-5.1 R28000.00 or Dyness 5.12 R27000 Option 2 medium cost Lux Power: Inverter 5KW Hybrid LV Single Phase (LUX-LXP5K-LV) R23000…

Hi, I just had my system installed: 2x Hubble Lithium AM2 5.5kWh 51V batteries and Sunsynk 12KW, 48Vdc 3 phase hybrid by an installer. The installation is directly below my hot water geyser and I am now concerned. Is this an appropriate place to install lithium batteries? Is this safe? Is this insurable? Should the installation be moved (or the geyser)?

  9. Battery Specification: Charge parameter: Charge Voltage Minimum 53.2V; Typical 55.0V; Maximum 56.4V Charge current: 0.1C to 0.2C Battery discharge parameter: Discharge voltage: Minimum 40.0V; Typical 48.0V; Maximum 53.0V I current have the following inverter settings: 02: 10A 05: USE 12: 44V 13: 52V 26: 56V 27: 55V 29: 42V I have noticed that the batterye voltage will drop with 40minutes from 46V to 44V. I have also noticed that the charge will slow down from 52V to 55V and will take almost 3 hours to reach 55V. Charge from 46V to 52V will be reached within less than 2 hours.

Hi I am looking at building a system in stages, since i do not have the finances for a once off complete system. My plan so far is to build a 3kva hybrid inventer on a trolley system with 2x 100ah gel batteries. Will get the system installed properly with COC when I have the finances for the panels Next year add 4 panels, year after change the battery out to a lithion batery and if needed add a second 3kva system to take it up to 6kva which will be more than needed for my place. My stove and geyser I am switching over to gas now and dropping the electric kettle aswell. I am looking at the following inverters, can someone please advise which will …

  12. With the Tsunami of Solar installers and suppliers emerging in the current market conditions, the supply of "legitimate" solar hardware (inverters, panels & batteries) has become a mine field. I have read of several "grey" imports that have been flooding the market which are sometimes offered at ridiculous prices that blows your mind. I believe once you have procured a system from a solar installer that obtained the hardware from the "grey" line, the warranties and support becomes basically null and void. Is there not one place where it is easily to determine who the official distributors / wholesalers are of the Tier 1 brands, e.g. Synsync, Deye, Luxpower etc. e…

Hi All I recently acquired a 5kW invertor with a single 5kWh battery and 6 panels. Issue I have is that I'm unable to see the power my non-essentials are using on the invertor, which is one of the key reasons I bought this invertor. I would really appreciate 2nd opinions on this while I engage my installer. In the System Mode settings, my installer initially set the following: Priority Load - Ticked Zero export - Ticked Solar Export - Unticked Limit to Load only - Ticked Grid tickle feed - 20W Inverter power limiter - 5000W The above works fine in powering my essentials, as per attached flowchart1. Installer ment…

I will install a 8kw inverter with my solar system. Does this mean I will be limited to 8kw usage even when there is no load shedding.?

  15. Help,so many options,so many scams . Burned my fingers once with a small system and scrapped batteries after 6 months. Received a quote after load monitoring of circa R90k but an eskom saving of R500 to R900pm. Pay back therefore 8 years ,best case without interest . I am not too worried about batteries at this point in time but will add later. Can i put in panels and inverter only? regards Brooks

  16. I am interested in getting the following setup: Sunsynk/Deye - 5kW inverter Revov R100 / Volta Stage 1 - 5kW batteries Looking to get the Sunsynk with the Revov or the Deye with the Volta. Apparently the official Deye importers (Africo Solar) are also the owners of the Volta battery brand. So if you pair them up you get extended 11 year warranty on the battery. What I want to know is if it is really better to get the Sunsynk over the Deye and if the Volta battery is decent? (See battery brochure attached) Are there any other battery brands which you wll recommend which are around R27k for a 5kW capacity. Thanks Volta Stage 1.pdf

  17. Hi all. Found my way here (like most of SA I'm sure) and have been reading through a lot of threads. As the title states - creative, so I know my way around images and colour, but not so much numbers and electrics. I have a ton of questions regarding how I've set things up so far, as well as the settings on the inverter, but if I need to down tools and get someone qualified to come through and finish it off, then I'm happy to do that. I used to run a Mecer 600w 24v UPS with 2 x car batteries as I only needed to run my laptop during LS, but 3+ years on and it's become the WIFI-only power backup. I recently bought a Mecer SOL-I-AX-5VP inverter and a Pylontech UP50…

  18. Good day I currently have my system setup with essential and non essential running separately. I want to know if I wish to wire the non-essential part of my db i.e. geyser and stove to my inverter on the AUX port, do I just run an extra appropriate thickness cable from the top of the earth leakage on the no-essential board directly to the AUX port on the inverter. No change-over switch etc. required? I someone could pst a sketch it would be much appreciated. What settings do I then need to change on the inverter? Thanks in advance. Regards

Good day, I am fairly new to this forum. Journey with a simple 12V battery and Mecer inverter a couple of years and when I damaged the lead acid battery, it was time to start building something a bit bigger. Currently my setup is as follows:- 4 x 445W Canadian Solar panels KODAK Solar Off-Grid Inverter King with UPS 5kW 48V REVOV Lithium R100 5.1kWh 51.2V 2nd Life Battery Raspberry Pi with Solar-assistant Home Assistant, various IOT devices, including a few switched to automatically disconnect things such as the tumble dryer when load shedding kicks in. My panels are on the eastern side of the roof and what I would really l…

  20. Hi I saw an add from the sunshop, selling lituim ion batteries quite reasonably and I bought one. Spoke to the guy and said it will work with the sunsynk 5kva hybrid. Purchased both and I see there no coms cable. Called them and I'm getting the run around. Is the coms cable for these batteries a normal ethernet cable? Secondly do you need a CT coil on the grid side? What if you want to feed it back it the grid as a grid tie in system? From what I read the CT coil stops the export of excess energy back into the grid. AM I correct in that understanding? Lastly looking for someone who can help advice my electri…

  21. Started by h4ns3n,

I’ve purchased a basic grid tied solution setup via a reputable installer. The components are a 1 x 5kw Deye hybrid inverter, 1 X 5 kwh shoto battery and 10 X 470w JA solar panels. My daily average usage is 23kwh. (Average over the past 4 months so summer will be lower I think) I’m confused about something the installer told me. (The install has not taken place yet, I have paid but the install is scheduled for later this month.) The installer has said all plugs and lights will be run via the inverter, but I just need to manage the load and avoid overload as it will void my warranty. I ideally wanted to exclude my kitchen …

  22. We have 24 260 wp panels installed with 2 combiner boxes to 2 Mecer 5 kW inverters installed in parallel. Currently due to various constraints, we have 12 panels connected to one of the combiner boxes in 3 strings of 4 panels in series. These are showing Voc of 139v but wildly swinging Amperage from zero up to only 7 Amps and barely charge our bank of 6 Mecer M3000 batteries. Tried to use the system in PV mode during recent load shedding but it could not support the relatively small load requirements of 1.1kW and went to battery mode. I guess our question is why we cannot seem to get the PV system to produce this relatively modest load?

  23. Hi Guys, please advise. I have a new Sunsynk inverter with 2x Hubble Litium batteries. My solar panels are loading my batteries up to 100% charge, but then my grid starts feeding paid electricity. Why does this happen? I believe my settings are correct. Grid should only kick in when batteries are below 25%. See images from my App below. I am adding my battery settings as well in case that is where the fault lies. Would dearly like some feedback.

  24. Started by Leek,

I recently had a Sunsynk 5.5Kw inverter installed paired with a Sunsynk SUN-BATT-5.32 5Kw battery. My question is : “Is it necessary to enter any battery charge and discharge settings manually or does the inverter “read” the required info automatically via the network cable that connects the battery to the inverter? Obviously one would like to stretch the lifespan of the battery as far as possible. That is why I would like to ensure optimal settings. Thank you in advance.

Hi Everyone, I have one 5kw Lux Power Inverter & 2 X Dyness BX51100 Battries. I am selling one of my battries to a family member and going to add. 5 X 455 Solar Panels onto the system instead. We use very small amounts of the battery during load shedding around 15% over two hours as one battery. Our house is a small town house and we use around a R1000 electricaty a month. Will 5 X 455 panels be enough to help with the electricaty bill and help charge the battries? Is it a stupid idea to sell one of the battries to do solar sooner? Many thanks in advance.
