  • Hi Members.  To update on my above post, I ended up booking my inverter in to Sunsynk in JHB on 16 August 2022. I received a call on 19 September that they had looked at the inverter and wou

I must correct myself. After updating to version 3384, a new option appeared. Settings -> Battery -> Page 2 -> Low Noise mode Enabling this setting shuts the inverter down, "Grid Mode

  • I have a 5kW Deye that I installed about two years ago. Same internals as the Sunsynk. I could never hear the high pitched noise, but Eskom recently installed split-prepaid meters which use powerline

Oh wow! I didn't think a firmware update to fix this was a possibility. I'm happy to be proved wrong on this.

So, how do I go about receiving the firmware update for the 5kW Deye inverters?

I asked to be upgraded to  V3.3.8.4 and they flashed V3.3.8.2 .. 😐 This version does not do anything to the noise . i guess i will have to log another request .

I'm currently facing this issue on my 5kW Deye inverter.

Has anyone had any luck with firmware updates or other fixes?

Yes on the Sunsynk 5kw issue resolved with firmware upgrade then settings pushed from their side fixed it. Just updating the firmware does not fix the issue. I would log a ticket with their support for assistance. Not sure how that would work for Deye.

Interesting.

Considering the frequency is often difficult to hear, many people shrug it off because they can't hear it, did you have to provide additional proof to show that the issue is there?

I'm not sure if Deye and Sunsynk work together at all (I'd imagine they do) but would just like to have my ducks in a row if and when I do get hold of them.

Oh yes been back and forth since August last year with them sending proof and videos etc., my inverter went to the service centre had its motherboard replaced even because of the noise I was complaining about.
At the end of the day I was communicating with a Deye engineer on the Sunsynk ticket logged for this issue where they then arranged for the firmware update and settings to be pushed.
I am just extremely happy that they were eventually able to fix it as it was driving me mad having things in the house emitting the high pitch buzzing.

Oh interesting that you were communicating with a Deye engineer for the Sunsynk ticket (and maybe that's going to count in my favour).

If it's not too much to ask (and if there isn't too much personal information) would it be possible for me to get that mail trail/ticket number and info that I could use as a reference if they're not entirely sure what I'm talking about (if you'd prefer DM'ing it that'd be perfect too)?

The buzz is driving me a bit insane too. Thanks for the info.

Unbelievable.  Unbelievable that SunSynk that is supposed to be a premium manufacturer can't get the basics right.

Firstly, engineers should have learned to never design switch-mode power supplies that run under 20KHz.  We have been building switch-mode power supplies for more than 40 years now.

Secondly, magnetic components such as transformers and inductors need mechanical damping.  The enameled copper wire needs to be taped and RTV/ silicone/ lacquer/ glue/ potting resin applied between and over the windings.

Worse, if that noise is made in DB panels or in electric loads, it means that the 230VAC output is not properly filtered.  Your pass-band is 50-60Hz.  To reject 15Khz should be as easy as pie.

Well, I will stick with my Axpert clone.  Thank you very much.

@Wiggly Electron  If SunSynk increased the switching frequency to 20KHz you might be happy, but your cats and dogs will not.  It is a very poor show not to filter the 230VAC output and have 20KHz noise all over the house wiring.

If you go to the trouble of making a choke yourself, I would suggest also adding a capacitor across L-N after the inductor.  The capacitor MUST be 250VAC X-rated.  X2 is good.  These are critical safety components and will have the VDE, URL and other safety standard logos printed on the capacitor.  A value of 0.47uF would be a good start.  Even a 0.22uF will help a lot.  Old, broken appliances are a good source of these capacitors.

It is always best to kill the noise at it's origin, rather than have it pollute the whole house and finally be killed at the mains filters of your end consumers such as TV, PC, chargers, etc.

I would like to say one more thing about this sad matter.  Although an inverter is controlled by a fancy microcontroller or most likely a DSP, it remains inherently a hardware device.  The design engineer has to calculate and choose his components for a decent phase-margin of his negative feedback control loop.  This is defined by capacitors and resistors.  Only a soldering iron will change that!

If I design for a PWM switching frequency of 15kHz and the software dude changes the frequency to 14 or 16kHz, then no sweat.  However, 20kHz is a very far distance removed from 15kHz.  This could badly effect the phase margin and lead to a less stable system.  I would hate to see a 5KW system go unstable.

I hope that SunSynk consulted a hardware power specialist to look at this before moving the frequency by such a substantial amount.

I am of the opinion that modern SMPS design should operate outside the ultrasonic range.  I.e. over 40kHz.  A higher switching frequency will allow for physically smaller magnetic components (for the same power) and MOSFETs these days are so fast that this should not really increase the switching losses.

I'll bet your left kidney that the entire control loop is in the DSP in this case, no need for a soldering iron.

You need to ask them specifically to fix this issue ,the firmware alone does not fix it . They will do a remote grid mode change and inverter will reset and the noise will be at 20 kHz.

Thanks for this. Is the procedure a "remote grid change" specifically?

But how? I sent a E-Mail to [email protected] a week ago and got no reply.

Hi. I was at the point of going for Sunsynk....now have serious doubts. Reading the comments/concerns leads me to thinking RSA is again being used as dumping ground for equipment not allowed in Europe. I think one needs to firstly distinguish between "mechanical" and "electrical" noize. Mechanical is generally sound generated by mosfet switching or inductor windings vibrating (poor manufacture). This should only be audible by those with hearing still capable of picking up >18khz or so and only in close proximity to the unit. I can sort of live with that if not too loud....if audible further than say 1 meter = poor manufacture (many switch mode systems are audible to some extent). The fact many refered to other equipment supplied from their inverter is a HUGE concern. That in my view is due to electrical noise flowing in the house wiring....also why some resort to filters. Question is then: has anyone measured this electrical noise at the inverter output? This might be above allowable levels (will not be tolerated in Europe and hence dumped here).....this might also be underlying reason for poor tech support. (dodging reality) Just upping the switch frequency is simply a bandaid....the line noize is still there and can cause issues (malfunctions/failure) with connected equipment. There is a reason for prohibiting EMC above certain levels. If it can interfere with neighboring prepay devices it must be serious. I specifically ask electrical measurements (harmonic analysis and / or waveform distortion) at the inverter as wiring impedance will dampen this electrical noize. (Possible reason why only some notice it at end devices). Can anybody advise please?

Hi Frik,

I've not seen any post in the forums with any rigorous analysis on the electrical waveforms of the Sunsyn/Deye inverters. (Although I'm not following very closely). I've seen some professional engineers review inverters (like the ecoflow models) etc on youtube and they do a pretty in-depth review on the outputs of these units. Maybe someone has gone and done this for a Sunsynk somewhere and posted it on youtube? Please let us know if anyone finds such a video.
