Genuine or cheap knockoffs?

Featured Replies

I am considering an 8Kw Sunsynk or Deye system and on looking around I have found 3 (so far) brands which on external looks appear identical to the Deye and SunSynk inverters. These are namely;

1. Magneto, apparently a South African company. Website has a contact number but no address.

2. Fusion, apparently a South African company. Website has zero contact details and is only marketing blurb..

3. Growcol, Claimed totally identical to Deye/Sunsynk incl. firmware by reseller. However apparent website (growcol-tech.com) is out of date and sales blurb.. Contact details show a chinese address and phone but whois reveals site registered in S.A.!! Site is exclusively english not a chinese symbol in site (sight LOL).

I am very suspicious that this is a website designed to deceive. Thus I won't be buying Growcol no matter how "reputable" the S.A. reseller is.

Are any of these inverters actually any good in terms of being really hardware and firmware identical to the Deye/SunSynk inverters. Do they use the same wifi dongle and App? Etc..? Or are the axpert clones in fancy clothing? Or something similar. Will there be any real warranty on them?

Both Magneto and Fusion also claim to have Lithium battery products (Magneto have supercaps which interest me). Are these products any good?

I am asking these questions because before I commit 1 Rand to any company I need answers and my requests to some of the resellers who it seems can only be contacted by email (phones just ring) are lacking the detail I require.

UPDATE: Received email from Magneto reseller who briefly states that Magneto is a rebrand, but omits to say of Deye or Sunsynk. Never mind, I am tempted to buy Magneto and the reseller I contacted is trusted by Powerforum so I guess all is good. Or am I naive and should rather purchase a Sunsynk or Deye, that's if I can find anyone with stock. And then try and determine if they are a scammer or not. LOL

My personal opinion is get the Deye or Sunsynk and don't try other people. If it's expensive save an extra month.

I have seen far to many people who went cheap and now regret it.

Also I don't know your situation but as said it's my opinion. :)

Not lekker when it's all in and then you start having troubles or it's not exactly what you thought. Post purchase regrett is not fun haha.

Growcol is GC Solar they are based in Midrand you can see there offices from the N1. If you are in a position to visit do so, it will give you piece of mind. The others I wouldnt waste my time as there is scams galore.

Sunsynk is also a rebranded Deye with new UI & firmware. Deye is the ODM. If you want a Sunsynk, then I think avoid all the confusion & buy one. That will avoid all the disappointment & you will have well spent, because then you got what you wanted from the start.

@Stev87........  GC Solar may be "reputable" but what is Growcol? A rebrand by GC Solar or someone else? They seem to "rebrand" Axpert clones and others etc. Where do these products originate? Are they imported and if so from where or are they sourced and rebranded in SA? Are they grey market? Etc., etc..

So many questions?

And the "chinese" website raises a red flag as to being genuine. I could be wrong but in my experience the genuine chinese companies websites are professional and up to date.

I can think of a few reasons why anyone would rebadge perfectly well known brands and sell them at more or less the same price as the originals, and none of those reasons are are good unless they claim , like SunSynk, to add value or alternatively to undercut on price. I have some experience with the early PC's and components we were getting from various sources in Taiwan.

But that's just me and my paranoia 🙂

@ThunderdoltGC Solar rebrands or rebadges so many products. The entire Solar market is dominated by the ODM model. Original Design Manufacturer is where a company like Deye will be approached by Sunsynk, Fusion, Sol-Ark & a few others like GC Solar & produce the exact same product under the Original Design. Deye will enter into an agreement & under this agreement there is many variables that can be tweaked depending on the buyer. To answer your question: All of these solar products originate from China including lithium batteries.

Now some ppl get romantic about Sunsynk & Keith (British CEO) about why the Sunsynk is better. Well I can tell you that Sunsynk asked Deye to produce them a Deye with special User interface & colours etc. They have marketed well & had to clean up the Original Deye user manuals & edit them into proper user friendly English. Sol-Ark the same in the US. It's a Deye with clever marketing & manuals redesigned.

A good example is also Voltronics. They are sold under the name Mecer, RCT, Kodak, MPP Solar, EASun, Growcol & many others. The key thing is that they are all Original Design Manufactured by Voltronics but Kodak is a yellow branded box & in some markets there are variations of the power output. So Kodak has the OG10.0. This particular model is 10kW in the case of the Kodak but in other global markets it's 8kW & is called the MAX2.

Another example is Soltaro. Soltaro all in one inverter & battery is an ODM & Livoltek has rebadged the original Soltaro machine. You will also find a Growcol exact machine which looks the same & has the same functions bar some small changes.

Now along with all this comes clones & variations of all of these models. By complete definition you are dealing with Chinese Original Design Manufacturers & resellers. They are dictated to by supply chains & big corporations trying to make a buck along the way.

However, buy from a reputable source otherwise you have no clue where on this great big side of the scale you are sourcing from.

Further as a suggestion, I would advise you to ask yourself one question? Will you do a DIY installation or will you seek the services of a skilled installation company?

These answers to the above will dictate whether you buy from a said reputable installer that will make sure you are getting proper original equipment or if you will source yourself.

Sourcing yourself is risky because you have clue from who & what you are buying. I also think you will generally get better pricing from an installer. Companies like Segen that market Kodak don't want to deal with you the end user because it's risky for them as some ppl don't have the necessary skills or knowledge to be successful with an installation. So you will end up buying from DIY Geek or some other reseller. As a reseller there is a middle man & hence the product is more expensive.

This is just insight into this solar world we have here in SA.

Maybe you already know all of this but I wanted to go a few steps further for others that may be reading this with some intrigue.

We have a Magneto inverter (which is a rebranded Deye) and Magneto batts.

Apparently Makro is starting to sell the products in the very near future, with approved installers to assist with installation.

Thanks everyone for your input.

@Steve87.............  Thanks for the detailed explanations. Yes I realise everything is made in China , but not all "clones" are equal, this site has a large number of people trying to get help, ask @Coulomb, for firmware updates etc. and unsuccesfully so for what they thought was a Voltronic product. That's what worries me. Personally I think the rebrander should upfront state that they are rebadged Deye products and are guaranteed to be supported by Deye in the event that said rebrander goes out of business.

I can understand a company wanting to differentiate and gain market share by creating perceived value-add, such as Sunsynk does and they  even charging more than the ODM, but I personally don't see the point in rebadging something and pricing it at the same price point as the original.

At least the Fusion is a different colour.

@Gavin286.......... Are those Magneto batteries !c or 0.5C ?

5.1Kwh so I think 0.5c

Correction - they are 1c

Hope this helps. We have been to their factory before we listed their products on the store. It's awesome. They the real deal! Flew up from CPT to JHB. Due diligence done.

Promise.

That is good news.

Do you perhaps have any details about their "supercapacitor" - like what cells do they use and why they call it a "supercapacitor"?

6 hours ago, Energy-Jason said:

I'm very sceptical about all super capacitors on the market.

Agreed. We have someone on the Australian Electric Vehicle Association forum claiming amazing specifications for "supercapacitors", and they happen to look like NMC pouch cells, have a maximum voltage of 4.2 V (suggesting NMC or similar, all but ruling out true supercapacitors, and likely but not conclusively eliminating so-called "hybrid supercapacitors"). He also mentions a claim of 30% higher fuel efficiency replacing a petrol car's battery with a supercapacitor one. Says this may be possible due to the higher battery voltage enabling a better spark. Well, the battery voltage is limited by the alternator, so I'm extremely sceptical about that suggestion.

I bought a 8 KW Hybrid Magneto inverter and 4 Magneto batteries. The SA Company who did the installation is reputable. I also bought an additional Magneto battery from Leroy Merlin in Fourways at a very good price.

I also want to fine tune some settings under "SYSTEM WORK MODE - TIME OF USE" and would like to know if there is a manual available for the Magneto range to explain the functions in more detail?

Although an old topic I have to agree with you on the so called claims made.

If you don't come right, try searching for a Deye (alternatively Sunsynk) manual or online tutorial, since it's probably just a re-branded version of the same hardware.

Other than that, maybe just post some pics of the System Work mode screens, with a description of what you'd like to achieve. Maybe a forum member can point you in the right direction.

Without seeing the actual screens one would think they should be close to the Deye/Sunsynk.

Funny I have not seen too many downloads for Deye but all over the net one finds the manuals and videos for Sunsynk.
