Is there any reason not to buy Pylontech UP5000's for a  roughly 25kwhr pack running with a 8kw Sunsynk ?

Prices seem competitive when compared to the other options - Hubble/Dyness/BSL and what else ?

I don't  notice many Pylontech complaints on this forum.

Not too confident about Hubble AM2's currently.

If, like in this case there are multiple packs - the current limitations which is normally mentioned alongside Pylontech advice - will not be an issue.

For background : I have a 5 x 4.8kwh battery pack cosisting of  3 x Hubble X-100's + 2 x Leoch/Averge 48100TB's also running with a Synsynk 8k. 

My question here is for another system I am planning.

Any advice from existing Pylontech users or Installers would be appreciated.

All i can really comment on is my own exp and i have been very happy with them so far, taking my batteries down to 5% every day no problems. Solarman registers exactly 7kwh discharge almost every day for my 2 US3000's.  I have monitored the cell voltages at 5% and the lowest cell was only at 3,15V which is still very conservative for LFP chemistry,so i am confident that they will last at least 10 years and/or still retain 80% capacity by that time. Will probably add another 2 UP5000's in the future.

If you don't want peace of mind, hassle free usage, with best in class performance at a reasonable price then don't buy them!

Seriously, there was an issue with upgrades that were required when mixing old batteries with new, but if one reads the reports from the AU study on batteries Pylontechs are really good batteries....I have 4 of them and cant complain after 2 years usage.

To supply your 8kW inverter from 48V battery you will draw 166A, just make sure the number of batteries/cabling can cope with that draw.

If I were starting all over again, and if I knew what I knew now, I'd specify Pylontechs.

The batteries I have now may be good (or may not be, they've been taken away for stress testing after a sharp drop in performance over the last year), but they are a local brand and the inverter manufacturers don't know anything about them. 

With my Goodwe inverter I have to set up self-define and punch in each parameter - and forgo comms between the BMS and the inverter. Or set them to BYD which is a sort of closest guess that may or may not be good for the batteries or be acceptable to the manufacturer.

If I had pylontechs I'd just select the particular model in the Goodwe set up menus and that would be it. The inverter would know how to speak to them and how they like to be treated.

I have 2 installations: one as an off-grid with 8 US3000 Pylontechs in daily cycle use, and one as a UPS for load shedding using Hubble AM2 at a holiday house.

I am very happy with the Pylontechs - no issues at all in just over 2 years.  The batteries are well engineered and (despite the evidence-free concerns raised by some) have really good BMS hardware and software.  My only issue is the annoying "stuck-at-89% SOC" feature.

I bought the Hubble for the UPS as it does not see daily cycles so the shorter cycle life of the Hubble's NMC chemistry is not an issue.  (Before Hubble removed the cycle counter from the RIOT the battery had only done 2 cycles in about 2 months)

There are of course no guarantees, but I think that Pylontech is more likely to be around in 10 years from now than any of the local brands.  That is my biggest concern with Hubble - my dealings with them so far has not inspired me with great confidence that they will survive for long.

Also very happy with my Pylons. I was trying to decide between 2 UP5000s or 3 US3000C. In the end went for the US3000Cs for 10 year warranty vs the 5years on the UP5000. A could small hoops to jump through to get the 10 years vs the 7 years that are standard, but very doable.

Whats a warranty worth? I hope I never find out, but would rather have a longer one with a well established international company.

Got my first two Pylons US2000B plus batteries in August 2020 and the other two in December 2020. Adding UP5000 next month, best purchase I have ever made. Upgraded the firmware on my US2000B plus to prep for the new battery and had no issues at all with the upgrade. Very simple and straight forward, you can not fault Pylontec batteries, they have a well documented track record. If I were to do the installation all over again, I will still buy Pylontec

I would say that is an overwhelming "Yes"  to purchase Pylontech.

The ironic thing is that, when I went in to my local Solar shop in Jan 2021 to buy the Sunsynk and batteries, I had nothing in mind except Pylons.

Then he started talking about 1C batteries and how easy it would be to fall foul of the Pylontech warrantee due to overcurrent drawn.

That is when he brought up Hubble - which was the first time I ever heard of them.

I bought the 3 x Hubble X-100's and 6 months later when I wanted to add two more, they had discontinued the model with no compatible replacement.

That forced me to buy the two Leoch/Averge 48100 TB's - which are apparently materially identical. Except they use different communication protocols.

So now the three Hubble X-100's communicate via Riot with the Sunsynk and I have Solar Assistant reading the two Leoch 48100's as well as the Sunsynk to compare the two battery types and see all Inverter statistics.

This is what they use to scare people from buying Pylontecs, You will never overcurrent draw as these batteries have build in BMS that protects the battery from such incidents.  The worst that could happen is for BMS protection to kick in and shuts the battery off and your sunsynk will draw from the grid. They just wanted to sell you the Hubble battery and the only way to do that was to tell you fairy tales.  

I have 4x US3000 but only been in service since Sept '21 so really too early to tell. Haven't had any fault or problem since installation.

What I will say, is that I wish it was a 16s battery instead of a 15s... because then I'd have been able to eek an additional +-350W from my 250/100 mppt 🤣

I have only one US3000 since Feb 2020 it was first on a clone Axpert and now on a Sunsynk and it works without issues. I do like the idea of other branded batteries being 1C but I don’t like the possibility of paying more school fees.

The US3000C has a longer warranty ,that is about the only real difference.

May I ask a question about battery care.

I have a 5 kVa Mecer and 4* 200Ah AGM batteries and 12 PV panels, my objective is to use as little utility power as practically possible and care for the batteries as best I can.

There are 3 inverter settings for setting program 01 to configure load source priority viz:

  1. SOL  - Solar energy provides power to the loads as first priority
  2. SbU  - Solar energy provides power to the loads as first priority also
  3. Utl   - Utility provides power to the loads as first priority

Considering the first two options, and the difference between them as far as battery usage is concerned:

  1. When on SOL, at dusk the inverter switches to standby mode and the utility charges the batteries to 100 % and keeps them at 100% until dawn or until there is sufficient solar energy to cope with the loads
  2. Whilst on SbU, at dusk the inverter remains on battery to provide power for the night time loads, and in my case, usually draws the batteries down to 70 odd %

My question is, what is better for the health of the batteries

  • To keep the batteries at 100% during the night or 
  • Allow the batteries to draw on the storage during the night, albeit using only the top 25% of the battery storage, and allow solar energy to restore the batteries to 100 % during sunshine hrs

Thank you, my point is whether it is harmful for the batteries to only use 25 - 30% DOD every day?

 

I have a stack of them too...

No hassles at all, except for one of them (the missing number 5) that had it comms board blown by a lightning strike.  But its BMS still works, so I've left it connected and it now lives in its own (hopefully happy) world.  I should take it in for a board replacement, but I haven't been too bothered because it still pulls its weight. The oldest one has 641 cycles and reports 95% SoH.

The pause in charging at 89% is not a bug, but occurs while the BMS equalises the individual cells in each battery.  I monitor the individual cell voltages (see above), and during the time the BMS reports the SoC as 89% the highest cell voltage goes up to almost 3.60 V.  Once all the cells have been pushed that high, they highest voltage decreases to 3.50V (in my case, because I use 52.5V as a charging voltage and there are 15 cells per battery) and the SoC goes up to 100%.

I'd buy them again without thinking twice.
